Looking to get recommendations for companies that install driveway gates. The fence is already installed and I am just looking to replace the wooden gate to a metal electronic one. Would this be something that the OB would recommend doing myself? I am fairly confident I could install it, but is it worth the headache?

My neighbor had a custom metal fence company put in gate panels, posts, etc. He had them add mount plates for electric opener. He DIYed the electric opener himself. He says that although its not a hard install its a tedious install to propely setup geometry, limits, wind effect, etc. Its something he had to tweak over many weeks.

Ill be DIY on double gate panel electric openers on mine this spring. Double opener is 10x as difficult because you have to get low voltage under driveway and all of the matching required to align the panels.

Assuming you are looking at a swing style gate,

I am confident that anyone could but in one like this:

I don't know enough about your capabilities to suggest DIY if it is more like this:

Truthfully, neither should be to difficult (maybe just a little tedious like the above poster said, and that would depend on how OCD / perfectionist you are).

Also, are you going hard power (How much electrical experience do you have? Do you have an extra circuit and the ability to run the wire with minimal obstructions? Don't forget to calculate voltage drop, load, and correctly size the wire...) or or you looking for battery and solar power?

I almost always prefer a hard power (do you have a home generator?) with a battery backup for power outages, but sometimes the solar / battery setup is soooooo convenient. Most gates have a manual way to open, if not all can be disconnected and pushed open so you aren't stuck if power is out and you have no battery. The problem here is typically power is out for the same reason you don't want to be out in the weather messing with the gate.

There is a manufacturer that makes one that has an automatic locking pin which is nice for "added security". It also has the added benefit of securing the gate in wind to help with the life of the opener.

TL:DR; There are a lot of options and good add-ons. Some options are more difficult that others, but a somewhat mechanically minded person that can also read instructions should be able to install all if not most of the styles.

They're easy but to extend the life. 1) make sure you have quality hinges that are serviceable, I have custom hinges with grease fittings. 2) everything is plumb and square 3) add the automatic lock to the gate, it prevents idiots from pushing them open and busting the gears, not realizing they are auto gates. Try to keep you gate as light as possible, adding a caster increases the drag on the opener.

If you doing a double gate, don't worry about running under the driveway, simply use a concrete blade to cut a grove in the concrete, lay your low voltage wires in the grove and cover with a driveway caulk or sealant.

I'm on my third opener over about a 22 year period. First one was basically ruined by the kids or their friends forcing it open. Installed the lock after that and problem solved.
