I’m a college kid looking to get into duck hunting. For some prospective, I’ve been once and shot one gray duck out of the one group that came in. I’d be ecstatic to shoot a duck a trip.

From what I’ve seen it’s impossible to duck hunt in SE LA without spending 5k/season for a private blind. I was planning on getting a pirogue and using my bay boat to get me close to a pond then paddling in. My bay boat will be in a slip in Delacroix the entire season, so I’d really like to hunt in that area.

Is it possible to hunt for free in Delacroix without going to the Biloxi WMA? Last thing I’d want to do is trespass or piss off some yahoo over some birds.

Father’s bay boat**
I do have a small amount of cash I’d be willing to pay towards hunting in Delacroix, but not 5k/season especially my first real season.

You wouldn't access Biloxi WMA from Delacroix. Everything in Delacroix is leased and you're right to
be careful where you go. Are you able to trailer the boat out of Delacroix? How far are you willing to drive? There are some public spots a pirogue will do just fine.

SELA ducks won't come easy and especially if you're going to hunt public land without experience. My first piece of advice is to get a good mapping app (basemap and OnX are great) and get to know the management areas you can hunt. Prepare to put in a lot of time and gas money if you want to be successful and if you're going to ask for advice, take internet advice for what it's worth. I learned a lot at boat ramps just talking to other hunters (and game wardens).

It's a grind and some don't think it's worth it. Personally I still find it rewarding and am happy to just have the chance to take a swing. I've been hunting public for a short amount of time too, so I kinda feel where you're at.

Send me and email at dpier16@lsu.edu ill send you a few spots in Biloxi Marsh you can go try. Used to hunt up there a lot, but mainly spend most of time in the Delta now.

As for Delacroix, it's all leased up and would suggest not hunting on other's property.

Always bring a rod with ya while in Biloxi marsh. Seem to always snag a few Reds in the decoys while hunting up there.

Work for a guide on weekends and that long winter break college kids get. If that is an option for you…if you are reliable and can call a little they will be a few looking for help I’m sure.

Get to hunt and meet people some good some bad but a hoot either way. Wish I could have done this when I was young.

Take your bay boat and Pirogue to wax lake outlet. Have an island you can camp on - could make a couple trips. I’d go down in daylight first trip I’d you check it out.

I really appreciate the info. I have a few buddies that have been hunting Venice for years. I think I may just tag along with them on Venice trips until I have a little more experience.

Kinda have me wondering - have any OB'ers ever become hunting buddies? Might be a dumb question but just curious. I've always wondered on solo days if there's anybody out there looking to join forces.

Assuming you have a pirogue, if you plan to come to Venice, I would get a Seatow Membership.

I’m sure it has happened before. It seems like some of the fishermen on the OB have made trips together.

Appreciate the heads up. We were stuck for about an hour on a flat before daybreak the one duck trip to Venice I was referencing in the OP. Would definitely be worth the ~$150/year for Sea Tow.

My dad and I have wondered about the recovery time of Sea Tow before. Anyone here ever needed a tug off a flat or needed to be towed back by Sea Tow? Curious how long it typically takes for them to get to you while inshore.

If you want to go to BM for opener, I'll show you how I hunt it. Your boat will be needed though

I’d probably look for somewhere else. I hunted Delacroix last year probably 10-15 times and barely shot my gun. Killed 6 birds all year. They just didn’t want to be there. The marsh got hammered by that last hurricane and all the feed disappeared so that was probably why the season was so bad but tbh it wasn’t much better the previous two years. There’s no public land in Delacroix either and I couldn’t suggest someone go get a lease now after the poor track record the last 5 years.

I know but I can’t/won’t tell you. You can’t figure it out like the rest of us did.

Please, whatever you do, do not take advice about Wax Outlet. Its not a place to explore without help, especially in a bay boat. I've hunted there 17 years, and still have issues with the current creating new sand bars in random places, and if you don't pay attention to the tide, you can be in for a long night.

Odds are that it is leased out also by the way, seen many a PPS boats running people off school board land
