What are all the extra lines and stuff on the silva compass for?

Getting bearings and distances on maps. Useful if you have a really good map. The main thing is they always point north.

I still have a gps pinpoint on my iPhone of a badass piece of driftwood. I found it on the way in on one of my slipe missions. Never went back for it though.

I'll probably print out a shitty map and laminate it and keep it in my bag for the hell of it. That WMA is so damn big you couldn't fit it all on a small map

It would've been perfect for the massive sac-au-lait I caught this year.

I found a pretty legit topo map of Maurepas WMA. Pretty depressing.

Yea you gotta get a zoomed in map of where you're gonna be roughly.

I guess I never noticed that it encompassed all of the land around the Diversion. Do you hunt around your house any?

Na, I gave up deer hunting years ago, but if that fresh water diversion from the Mississippi River happens perhaps some ducks will return and I will be able to leave the house via boat to hunt...

They used to kill piles of mallards in that swamp. Not sure what happened, something about the hydrilla and the drainage now. Downshift can probably splain it.

My dad was reading some more recent stuff on it today and telling me about it. Looks like it's a little closer to happening. Hope it happens.

Salvinia is a non native aquatic plant that the ducks can not eat. It has moved in and killed all the food. The original Duck Commander video was filmed down here. Now there is nothing. I can stand on my balcony at dusk and count a handful of wood ducks, and a big duck every blue moon...

Between that and the diversion canal holding back drainage of blind river the duck hunting really went downhill. That's how my dad splained it. He used to hunt on what is now the WMA

That used to be mallard heaven.

ETA: God forbid the mallards ever come back. We'll have to booby trap our boat launch with how fanatical duck hunters are these days.

The Diversion levees have been here for 60 years, I'm not sure how that caused a change.

You happen to go check out my dove field? Looks pretty good, but I don't think it'll be mature for opening day. May be a second split field. I did have a couple deer feeding in it.
