Not worth it, my man.

Coming from a man who lost 2 duck dogs this summer..... U dont want to watch a gator get your dog.

We take them in teal season, only in places we are tottally confident there are no alligator threats.

That being said, there are a couple blinds at our place that we dont hunt them the 1st split because of gators.

If one was ever chasin my dog am I gonna kill it? Dam rite.

Will not take mine anywhere there is gators. Not worth the risk even if you get a shot at the gator

Its like loaning money to a friend. If you can afford to lose it then go right ahead.

I usually just take my gator during teal season. Takes a lot of work to train a tender mouth onto a gator. We pulled the teeth on ours.

My sister watched a 'gator grab her neighbor's golden retriever at her house in South Carolina. Said it was awful.

I've been told that they are crazy about a swimming dog. Two accounts where they saw the wake going for the dog and couldn't get it to come off of it with steel shot or a .45 pistol.

Just not worth it. I may have finally got in a rice field so I'll get to work mine pretty hard to see where we stand for big duck season. I'm pumped.

I got to take a few trips out to the marsh last month for work and after seeing the amount of gators, I would never take my dog there early in the season. As for ending the alligators life I remember being told you could kill it if the gator was after your dog, BUT it turns out that may not be the case. I looked up the regulations and this is what I turned up.

quote:

b. These regulations shall not prohibit a person from killing an
alligator in immediate defense of his or her life or the lives of others. Alligators killed under this provision must be reported to the department
within 24 hours.

They never say anything about dogs or property.

That being said I don't think it is worth the risk at all. Good luck this season and safe hunting.

I had a friend recently lose a hog dog to a gator. He shot it. Word got out, two wardens showed up at his house. He told them what happened, the said no ticket.

Later, they returned and said their boss said they had to give one. He actually shot two. Shot, saw it again- come to find out, it was actually a different one.

I told him I think it'll be dropped once he gets to court. They can't have people saying/hearing a gator was killed and no ticket issued, I guess. Being cautious not to set bad public precedent???

Moral of the story, and that is a true story, even a fish wouldn't get caught if it kept its mouth shut.

Yes I do. I can't say the dog was attacked because it was teal season but it was attacked nontheless. Not eaten, attacked.

CB....

Fwiw

I know of at least 20 dogs that have been shot- all but two breaking.

Around 30-40 including 1 of mine Twice that have been bit by snakes...

About a dozen that had near fatal run ins w nutria...

So the gator risk is low....like a great white shark - the encounter is more likely to be fatal.....

I agree

I hunted mine in Venice last year during teal opener. She is trained and I can control her at all times. I never let her go in the cane though. She was always within sight.

I posted earlier, its like loaning money to a friend...........

Never seen or heard of a dog getting attacked in the marsh.

But I'd just shoot any inquisitive gator anyway. Can't imagine anyone cares.

Snitches get stitches.
