Just passed a small bay in Ireland and had green heads rafting. Then I passed 5 dogris. Going to try and get a pic.

Dos = back. Gris = grey. So, grey back, better known as a scaup or bluebill.

They have one called a ‘tufted duck’ I see in the parks sometimes here in Holland. Looks like a ringneck with a bad hair cut. And they also have a pretty sweet looking goose called an Egyptian goose. I can’t help but wonder what they’d taste like.

I also see grays and mallards on a daily basis, along with some huge swans and the occasional Mandarin. And more poule deaus than you can shake a stick at.

In the Netherlands last year around this time was full of geese and ducks. Looked a lot like south Louisiana with tons of marshland and birds but no one hunting.

Scaup are not at all unusual in northern Europe.

Those are in Miami also and some in Texas. Their numbers are growing and speculation is that they will be wide spread eventually.

England has Mandarin Ducks in the wild now and they are breeding and increasing.

The parks of London have Rose-ringed Parakeets that were brought over from India and are now considered to be pests in London. Pretty, though. So are the Mandarins.

Yeah we have those here in the Netherlands too. Me and my son call them ‘green rockets’. I’m shocked they are still here in the cold weather because I would have guessed they are originally from a warmer climate, but I haven’t bothered to look it up.

Didn’t Anthony bourdain hunt ducks or geese in one of his episodes In Europe, I want to say it was Holland?

Hunting there is rare, but they do have hunters.

I talked to a guy at a pub in Sneem in western Ireland and the red deer are protected. Anyway he states some have been carrying TB and the sheep farmers kill them on their property if seem due to spreading it. Saw some this morning

Oh yeah you certainly can’t hunt every where.

But they deer hunt for those little tiny things all over Europe Germany, Austria, Italy, etc. They have some sheep they hunt too. Obviously things like pheasants or upland birds they hunt some.

A lot of the ‘hunting’ I think is more technically game management and numbers control.

But the archery talk forum has multiple posts a year from Euros hunting big game.

I have no idea about ducks and geese, but I’ve seen some videos of guys hunting them.

Ever noticed the pintails in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and murals? They were so thick on the Nile that they hunted them with throwing sticks. There are thousands of examples.

I remember seeing somewhere that this is actually a huge problem for airports in the area.
