We have a two story house with an additional finished basement and our 3 year old neutered Austrian Shepard is very well housebroken on the main level.

However whenever he can get upstairs (it’s blocked with baby gate but my teenagers leave it open sometimes) he runs up there to drop a deuce.

Same with downstairs although that is less often since it is shut off with a door.

How do I house break him for the upstairs and downstairs?

You figure it out please post it.

I got a nerf gun and every time I see them upstairs I go to town. Now anytime I’m in the house they stay downstairs but if I’m not home and the kids let them upstairs the still drop a steamer every now and then.

I have no idea but this is what I would try.

I would kennel them in a crate in the area that they are doing this. Let them sleep in the kennel at night so they begin to claim the area as their own and not feel the need to mark the area by shitting or pissing. Let them out in the morning and immediately bring them outside.

Rub his nose in it and give him a swat on the arse. Seriously. If you housebroke him to the downstairs, you can do it everywhere. The dog is simply taking a shite where its convenient. Let him out/take him out more frequently so he can shite outside, but eliminating in other parts of the house is happening cause he doesn't know any better. Teach him.

My Yorkie does the same thing - every chance he gets, when the gate is moved he’ll run upstairs to take a dump in my guitar room.
