10 year old rescue recently developed diabetes. After about 6 months of twice daily insulin shots it appears that she has developed cataracts. Google research shows that dogs with diabetes almost always develop cataracts and may become blind in both eyes within 9 months. We've made an appointment with LSU Vet Center (who actually have vet ophthalmologists on staff) for a visit.

There's a ton of eye drops online claiming that they can reverse cataracts without the need for surgery.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any info would be appreciated

I don’t have any advice for you on the cataracts but I will say that any serious medical issue we have had we go to LSU
We like our vet for everyday issues / shots but LSU has been able to figure out / fix issues our vet couldn’t

Eye doc here just not for animals for people...

There is currently nothing to reverse cataract formation it's all snake oil. There is something in early stages of FDA clinical trials for cataract reversal but it's a ways off. Right now your only option is cataract surgery which is expensive

He will be fine and learn to live with it. We had a dog when I was younger get cataracts, and lived until he was 12. Still ran around the yard on his own and everything. They learn to pick up on shadows to see. I think paying to reverse cataracts in a dog is a horrible use of money, but that’s just me.

sounds like Nuclear Sclerosis , not Cataracts. NS comes on much slower and the animal can adjust to it. Cataracts comes on fast and can and will confuse the animal.

Don't take this the wrong way but Nuclear Sclerosis IS 100% cataracts. Nuclear Sclerosis is a type of cataract, the most common cataract seen in aging animals/humans.

Almost all cataracts come on very slowly with nuclear sclerosis (clouding of the nucleus of the lens) being by far the most common type of cataract.

When I first brought my now 4 year old lab to the vet as a puppy. The vet told me the dog had a cataract in his right eye, that I should call the person who I bought it from to get my money back. I had already owned the pup for 2 weeks and told the vet my kids and wife would kill me if I returned the dog.

I contacted the seller and asked for a discount and he pretty much told me to get fricked, his vet didn't see any cataracts. The pup I bought was the last one to be sold.

It hasn't seem to have affected my dog as of yet.

Da Hammer is correct. I’ve had several owners of dogs and horses try the topicals and nothing has shrunk except the size of their wallets.

Thanks to all especially da hammer. The appointment at LSU isn't until the 16th. Was hoping that maybe there might be drops that might slow or stop the progression.

Asked vet about this last week. There is nothing except surgery Wich cost a couple of thousand per eye. He said those drops do not work and will not slow down development. Good luck. My dog is almost completely blind now. Honestly we dont know what we are gonna to do

Not what I was told by my vet. Did you actually click the link I provided?

Yes I did. Your link says lenticular sclerosis you said NUCLEAR sclerosis. Nuclear sclerosis IS 100% a form of cataract. End of the day the fox for either is surgery or let it ride.

You can continue on your internet source I’ve only been to school for 8 years and practicing for 18.

omg dude.

quote:

What is lenticular sclerosis?
Lenticular sclerosis or nuclear sclerosis is the medical term for a bluish transparent haze that develops in the lens of the eye in middle-aged to senior dogs. This is considered a normal change in the lens associated with aging, and is observed as a cloudiness or bluish discoloration on the pupil.

Same condition.

Look go with what you want here. Winning an argument on the net is like winning the special olympics.

Go with your internet source or an eye doctor with almost 20 years experience I promise I won’t loose sleep over it.
