I’ve got a cur/hound/mutt that has been bitten at least 4 times in the 2 summers I’ve had him. I give him some Benadryl and keep him cool for a day or two and he’s back being a swamp donkey before the week is out everytime.

I posted that Benadryl not effective for snakebite and got 6 downvotes.

I googled : Is Benadryl effective for snakebites in dogs ?

AI Overview: No,Benadryl is not recommended for treating snake bites in dogs.

AKC:Ineffective Venomous Snakebite Treatments-Antihistamines(Benadryl)
False information has circulated suggesting Benadryl is effective against snakebites,it isn’t.
They listed other things not to do such as apply tourniquets, ice,NSAIDs
They also state that Rattlesnake vaccine is ineffective

Asclepius Snakebite Foundation-Benadryl Does Not Fix Snakebites
Please stop sharing this information.
They also recommend against rattlesnake vaccine.

I stand by my post that Benadryl does nothing for snake bites.

When I had beagles I had a couple bitten by copperheads. They got over it in a couple of days.

Keep in mind, the vaccine is usually about $50.
Anti venom can be north of a thousand.

Listen to the Snake Talk podcast episodes 37 and 83.
Specialist doctors claim the vaccines do not work, and most vets and medical doctors do not know how to properly treat venomous snake bites.

benadryl

Here is the dosage chart for Benadryl. Good to have to reduce swelling and itching (not effective against snake bites).

I had a 100lb+ German Shepard that did not last a day after being bit by a Copperhead. I took him to the Vet right away, but it was to late.

I went by my vet today to pick up the prednisone. They also threw in a bottle of something that is a stronger version on Benadryl.

Yep, research shows the only thing effective is antivenom. Benadryl, prednisone do absolutely nothing for treatment of venom. Venom is not a histamine.

My Lab HATES snakes. She has been bitten a couple of times by Western Diamondbacks in New Mexico. The first time it happened I thought she was a goner for sure....vet assured me lacking an infection or complications she would be fine. I did opt for the vaccine though. She was of the same opinion about a road runner LOL but never managed to capture one....not from a lack of chasing the damned things.

I don’t think it works for eastern diamondbacks. That’s all I’m worried about here.

It may or may not work for western diamondbacks but my lab has been bitten by one several times. After the first I had her vaccinated every year but she reacted the same vaccinated or not...basically while hunting like nothing was wrong but she'd be tender when it was time to load and she'd act like she was about to die when she got home and my wife babied her.....until I got a gun out and she forgot to play hurt....

Our ranch is also in Coleman. What vet do you use out there? The only one I know is on the north end of town

I have never known a dog not to get over a snake bite in a few days. They swell bad but turn out ok. Maybe that’s not always the case but just my experience.

I had beagles get bitten a couple of times, they got over it in a couple of days with no treatment,I always assumed it was copperheads.

I’ve heard rattlesnakes will kill a dog, esp. if bitten face or neck.

I knew guy that had catfish ponds and also had a female Chesapeake Bay Retriever that hated snakes. He took me on a ride on his SxS with dog on back.We saw a snake, dog saw it and went after it.Snake went under ,dog went under and came up with it.It was one of the Diamond Back Water snakes, non poisonous but it was biting the hell out of the dog.
Damnest thing I ever saw.He said she had been bitten by water moccasins so many times she got immune, didn’t swell at all.
