Cross threaded or torqued to spec, tight is tight.

We have a hytorq. I'm not sure how high it goes but the 1.5" head does up to 8000 ft lbs if I remember right. Hearing all that metal popping and crunching is nerve racking. I've seen a 2-5/8 socket let go before and it was not cool.

Yeah, I don't know what they have now, but the old hydraulic machine that I use to use weighed about 60 lbs That was just the part that went on the head of the bolt or the nuts, didn't include the hydraulic pump and tank. I would suspend the business part from an overhead crane, so I wouldn't have to keep movin that thing around by hand, from nut to nut. Like you say, it gets suspenseful when that torque is getting way up there. You just naturally start backing away, as far as you can get from it.

These days you can get what looks like a souped up cordless drill that will torque many thousand ft-lbs with dead nuts accuracy and weighs about 15 pounds, and will spit out a report on it. It's amazing and so much safer than multipliers and cheaters and shite. I push that stuff big time with anyone who deals with big critical stuff.

Disclaimer: I am not a hytorq salesmen and they dont pay me commissions but they damn sure should as much as I pimp their stuff.

get another hitch. It has a pin and swaps in 8 seconds. Tighten her till she squeaks, weld that shite up. Special purpose tool is what a hitch is

This is the correct answer.

They are fantastic. Especially when your installing a 30" valve and you have little room on the bottom and you better not frick up the liner by over torque

If you ever want to swap the ball out for 1 7/8 or 2 inch etc, best do it the right way so it's removable for different ball sizes. Or you end up having to switch out receivers. Or you end up with multiple tow vehicles depending on ball size because like others said, you ain't getting the old one off. Round and round.

It’s really not that difficult.

I got a new truck that has the towing hitch, but didn't come with a tow ball. Now I have the ball but am reading online that it needs to be torqued to 250 ft-lbs. I don't have the tools to do that and don't really want to buy a torque wrench just for this one thing. Does it need to be torqued or can I just get 1.5" wrench to tighten it? Obviously I don't have a lot of experience with towing but hope to change that over the next few years.

I would think that if you aren't a jerk about it, you could probably drive to any garage or Walmart auto center and ask to borrow a torque wrench real quick and not have any issues.

No load you can apply to that ball with any normal bumper pull trailer will be anywhere close to breaking anything.

I don't know how, but I have stretched and bent a ball before

A friend of mine bent his gooseneck ball doing dumb shite of course

How tight the nut is isnt going to have anything to do with that. If you overload the piss out of it its going to bend/break.

Get it as tight as you can. If you bought it at Walmart the rust will weld it for you.
