how long is the typical line from the gun to the point, or wherever it attatches to the projectile?

I'm not positive, but I think its around 20'. Will have to wait on Hat to chime in.

The length depends on the setup. Some have reels, some are fixed which would be 2.5x's the barrel length.

Last time I talked to hat about it he said the rig they use is attached to your hand and if you get into something dangerous you just let go, you lose a spear but it's not your life. I talked to him earlier today and he said if he had a guess something in the water probably knocked Blake out and he drowned bc earlier reports said he was on his way up without any fish

A 20' shot is rare except for blue-water hunting for pelagics with really long super-strong guns. I have been diving for 10 years and on scuba, i'd say most shots are between 6 and 10 feet, occasionally even less than 6 feet. In dark conditions under a surface murk, the fish will get really close sometimes. The time I shot the 1 warsaw i've ever shot, i sat there debating for about 30 seconds if it was a warsaw or jewfish (jewfish are illegal to shoot) and he didn't move. They are aggressive and will protect their ground. I'm a wimp by helldiver standards but just don't do it enough to feel confident going beyond about 130 or shooting fish over 50 pounds. Seems like at least 1 diver dies every year out of Louisiana, and that stuff stays fresh in my mind when i dive, not to mention the "oh sh!t" experiences i've had a couple times.

This is a sad story, really sad to hear about the fiancee and baby on the way...I can't imagine what she's going through right now. Prayers sent to the family and friends. God bless them....

Last thing I heard is that they are trying to get a boat with an ROV to do whatever they can to bring him home. They arent going to stop looking this soon.

There is still no true idea of what happened to Blake. Could many many things.

Ya that's a good way to look at it. Hope the family can find some comfort in that.

Well, this is just tragically sad. It is a shame that little baby will not get to know his Dad. He sounds like a great guy.

I'm still holding out hope that he will be found. I have seen too many of those survival shows to give up hope so soon.

I didnt know Blake personally but I know Nobile (the guy he was diving with) and we have a lot of friends in common since we both went to the same high school just a different times. And there isnt a whole lot of people in the spearfishing community and you pretty much know of everyone..

Man,this is just to sad.
Always a good down to earth type of person that tragedy strikes.
May Gods angels surround his family at this sad time.

Bad stuff man, another kick in the gut for the spearfishing community.
Last year we lost Bill Crawford and now this with Blake.
When these things occur there are always more questions than answers.
From what I understand, Jon shot the grouper and was ascending when he lost sight of Blake @ 160'
He saw a small trickle of bubbles and turned to follow them. At some point Jon became too narced to continue down and returned to the surface.
EB873 sits in 775 feet of water.
He is probably at the bottom.

This is simply heart breaking. Someone so young with a baby on the way. This is horrible news.
