Hey guys,
I thought of this last week when I cleaned my Kimber Micro 9 because it had started misbehaving w/ failures to return to battery. The action was (uncharacteristically) very sluggish. After cleaning it, it agains runs fine. I'm not sure how long it'd been between cleanings. It got me thinking about "dirty ammo." While breaking it and and practicing I shot inexpensive ammo, mostly steel cased. During the time, I mainly shot Tulammo (steel), but also some Winchester Forged USA (steel), Blazer (aluminum), Monarch (steel) and Aguila (brass). That brings up the question: what's the dirtiest ammo you've shot? Is there some ammo so dirty that you refuse to shoot it?

And yes, going forward I'll keep the Micro 9 clean.

Subcompact guns are going to run dirtier, they aren't burning as much of the powder and they have to dwell longer. My Glock 26 always has more fouling than my 92FS. Some ammo runs cleaner but I always clean after shooting, makes zero sense not to when it's do easy to do just a quick wipe and put a little lube down.

Tulammo is very dirty burning stuff. I don’t care to shoot steel cased stuff thru my firearms.

The only time I’ve seen a gun have some problems cycling was my M&P core when it was bone dry and the powder fouling was causing the slide to slow down and short stroke. A simple drop of oil sped the slide back up and I didn’t clean it until the course was over. No other problems.

But I’ve seen the wax from steel-cased ammo really gum up a gun before. It’s probably the dirtiest ammo out there and it doesn’t create as good of a seal as a brass-cased round does. So you also get some residual blowback or trash into the gun. I’ve also had steel cases get seized in the chamber of ARs before. They just lead to a lot of problems.

If you stick with all brass I honestly doubt you’d see many reliability issues at all. But for practice it honestly doesn’t matter. Shoot what you’re comfortable shooting.

Remington UMC has been some of the dirtiest I've shot.

Blazer - aluminum or brass - has always been some of the cleanest.

1+. Used to could find aluminum Blazer at nearly any discount store, but it's getting hard to find. Looks like it's mainly at mail/internet order stores.

Different calibers, but I've shot plenty of steel Tula and Monarch through my Makarovs. Monarch, btw, is simply Academy's store brand, they import Tula, Wolf or Bear.

I've also shot lots of different brass 9x19.

I'm going to say that I think Aguila might be the dirtiest of those; although I have to admit I gave up on Remington at least a decade back, and Winchester WB not much later.

For a shorter barrel, "dirty" ammo might be surprising brands. If the round is optimized for 4" barrels, you might get a lot of unburnt powder spilling out after 3".

That ammo is awful in my Ruger 556. Misfires on about 1/3 of the rounds. It shoots any other ammo fine.

Yeah Tulammo I try to avoid, anything cheap made off shore is not the best.

I wonder if the firing pins strikes are lighter on the Ruger and other guns?

I've shot Tula, Wolf and Brown Bear in both 9mm Makarov and in 7.62x39 (through my SKS). Never a misfire or failure. Never a damaged gun, either.

It just seems odd that factories can make fully functional rounds in one chambering, and "so bad" in another. And, it sort of flies in the face of 'traditional wisdom'... I don't expect the Russian stuff to be particularly accurate, but I do expect it to work.

Walmart usually has the Federal aluminum - pretty sure it's the same as Blazer.
