Hey Diesel heads...

Got a buddy looking to unload his

1997 7.3 f250 4x4 extended cab. Mint. Everything works. 212k miles. His timing cover is leaking coolant and to fix that they said you have to pull the engine(3k repair quote). Someone can probably do it at home, hes not a wrench turner.

It's a third vehicle for him so he's looking to sell it. He is original owner and meticulous. He's not sure what to ask for it. He has one local guy interested in it. Interior is red cloth.

If not I told him the Facebook MP

I'd like yalls input. I'm not a diesel guy. He's a great guy so I wanted to help him out.

Edited for clarity. I'm not buying it. I was wondering yalls opinion on pricing it for him. I'm not a diesel fella and he wouldn't know. I feel like market wise he may get more than the blue book with the 7.3

If it doesn't have high blowby or some other sign of impending doom, pay him what he wants for it if you want it and like it and he understands that you will have to put $3,000 into it.

Or don't, and just let it leak.

Either way, extremely cool truck. The mileage is a non factor if it's been maintained and treated well.

Maybe I misspoke. I don't want it. He's wanting to list it and is not sure what to ask. Thought the diesel pros here would weigh in...I'll edit the top post

Tell him to list it for $20k obo and see what happens.

Or post it here for $12k and someone will buy it tomorrow.

I honestly have no idea what I would ask for it. $20k or so? Use truck market is really weird right now. I guess it depends how quickly he wants to sell it. That's a classic to some people and a clapped out liability to others.

I can handle the technical side of what makes them go, but valuation is something I don't understand at all. That one emotional buyer who also has money might happily give $50k for it, but is that guy in the market right now?

If he's not in a hurry I bet he could get $35k for it.

Yea I've been looking and it was so all over the map I came here for the experts haha.

If it wasn't in such good shape I wouldn't worry to much. Hard to price something when it's that nice and it's a diesel.

He's not in a huge hurry. When he said he would probably just trade it in I told em I'd buy it just to flip it haha. Then I told him I'd look around for him.

I wouldn’t list it below $20k.

It’s the type of truck that can be sold on the “national” market, meaning the internet is the seller’s friend.

I read this and then I read it again.... and now i can't get past the word "mint". So is the ext cab mint or the whole truck? Because a possible $3k repair job would lead me to believe that calling it "mint" is a little bit of a stretch.

Y'all are on crack if you think you can get almost 40k for that truck. Jesus Christ.

Have you seen what people are paying for "square body" trucks these days?

It's totally ridiculous. Somebody will absolutely pay 20 for it and I'd be surprised if he couldn't find someone who'd pay 30 with a little patience.

as someone who did a national search for a 7.3 OBS a few years back (ended up with a 1999 model, couldnt find one i wanted in the old body with low enough miles), i think 20k-ish is probably a solid asking price. i dont think he will get that much, but he might. when i was shopping for them (2017 i think), a crew cab / long bed OBS with 100-150k miles was around 22k. obviously the market is different now, but your buddy's truck has three knocks against it - needs a specific expensive repair, over 200k miles, and extended cab. lots of guys looking for crew cabs vs extended cabs because they have families that they need to be able to haul around from time to time, and there's some kind of mental trigger when a truck rolls from 199,999 to 200,000 that makes it seem much older. is what it is.

i may be way off with the numbers, but i'm right about the other stuff. believe me, i went deep down the 7.3 rabbithole. i think 20-22k is a good asking price with a rock bottom of 16 or 17k. take those numbers with a grain of salt.

if he is patient, eventually someone will come along and give him asking price. almost guaranteed. there will be a 45 year old rich guy who had that exact model in the 90s and wants another one or some guy who that was his dream truck in high school but never got it. something like that. a lot depends on how motivated he is to sell it fast.

it's become a cliche, the baw with the 2004 rusted out 2wd diesel with shiny rims and a subwoofer asking 40k on craigslist and saying NO LOW BALL OFFERS, I KNOW WHAT I HAVE HERE, but in this case, your buddy really DOES have something here, and time is his friend.

Everything works. He used to cover it with a truck cover every morning in the parking lot type mint. Everything this guy has looks brand new.

Until you have to drop $3k on it, right off the bat.
