I would go with the 18v lithium instead of 20V

FWIW, the 20v is Li Ion as well, most brands are slowly migrating over to 20v

What is the weight difference between an 18 and a 20V? That is a HUGE thing if you have one in your hands all day. 2oz can feel like 20lbs after a few hours. That was a big reason why we switched. MUCH less user fatigue now.

Well, apples to apples, I would go with the Makita 18v. In fact, I traded in my personal Dewalts for Makitas when they were offering $100 off for competitors trade ins. I like the feel and the weight of the Makita better. The same Dewalt with the same amp hour battery was heavier and more cumbersome to me. Hence the switch throughout the company. Most of the cordless drill manufactures are in a price war right now. You should be able to pick up a great deal on any of them if you have another brand to trade in. I believe all are offering the $100 in trade ins at the moment.

Should I throw in the Milwaukee m18 Fuel hammer and Makita LXT into the choices?

Go to amazon and order the 5-piece dewalt set for roughly $500. It comes with that first drill, a smaller impact, sawzall, skillsaw, and badass light. all 20v li-ion. Much better bang for the buck.

Those type hammer drills are great until you try getting into your slab. You will want a real rotary hammer for that.

This. HUGE difference. I had to set anchor bolts for my sill plates.... I did 2 with my Dewalt hammer drill before going to rent a rotary hammer. Like drilling through butter with that thing.

Not really. DeWalt's still the better overall tool. Used Makitas when setting a bunch of cabinets and they worked fine but they use plastic where they shouldn't which is why I have one in parts because it really hasn't been worth my time to rebuild. Milwaukee cuts corners in the details which is why they generally are a cheaper tool.

Corded, possibly. Was my go to brand once, no way now.

So I went to home Depot to get a feel for them. The larger dewalt is huge. I liked the way the makita, Milwaukee and #2 dewalt (brushless) felt, but I'm always scared of buyers remorse. I'm a little out of my league on what I actually need but I don't know if I need something so big and powerful (#1 dewalt) or I will be glad that I got the big dewalt.

Why would you not buy a corded hammer drill? Taking it into the woods?

I would beg to differ here. We actually saw more clutch and transmission failures with the DeWalts than we have with the Makitas. Like I stated earlier, this is with over 40 combo sets in industrial operation for 8 to 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. I don't think a homeowner would go wrong with either honestly. I, and my guys, just prefer the Makita. Now, if you want massive torque, get the 1/2" DeWalt impact. It will snap a wrist with the amount of torque it has. All of this is, of course, IMO

Did commercial and residential carpentry, plenty of Makitas and pretty much all worked great but suffered catastrophic failures of gear boxes or some other major part. Especially the li-ion impacts. DeWalt clutches are at least repairable, Makitas are basically junk when something goes wrong. Tearing up a clutch in either takes some doing and it usually isn't the tools fault.

Keep in mind that the DeWalt 20V is really a 18v

I never put 2 and 2 together on that. I saw a few brands are switching over to "20v" but always assumed it of the 19.2 and rounded. I see why they called it 20v. but it seems to add to a false sense of superiority though.

Buy a combo pack(Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt) with an 1/4 impact driver and compact drill driver(shorter length comes in handy) LiIon. Buy a cheap skil electric hammer drill, you wont use it very much, if its just around the house

I agree 100% with NYC Auburn.. I am a fairly advanced DIYer and I found that the cordless hammer drills can't hold a candle to the corded ones. I personally would rather run extension cord and use my Dewalt corded hammer drill. Dewalt corded drill runs right around $100 and offers more power. Spend your tool allowance money on something else.

I ended up getting the #1 drill. I got the Hammer feature because I will only use it a few times and don't want to spend $100 on a dedicated hammer drill when the feature is like 20-30$ more. If I start using the hammer feature a lot, I will probably buy a corded version.

Plus the specs didn't even come close to that #1 vs any other similarly priced drill.
