Deposit on a not yet conceived Boykin

So my woman/I put $200 deposit in October to get on list with only Boykin breeder in Houston area. We are #3 on the list for male pups- I want a duck/dove dog that can handle the occasional goose.
Fast forward to today, I get an email from the breeder that one of his females won best in breed at Westminster...female is from a litter of b!tch that I could potentially be getting my dog from. Said b!tch went into heat this week.
He never cashed our deposit check, but did confirm receipt.
Will I be fighting a rate increase? I would think we had a verbal contract.
TIA.

Shouldn't. Oh, boykins are very high active dog. I have a mix breed of ch Lab and Boykin. He is small like a boykin, same color and wavy hair, but not as long as a boykin. He is working real good retrieving and now that he is around 10 months, he is settling down some. He loves to run, point birds and keeps an eye to the sky to mark birds. I never had a lab do what he is doing and I trained a few labs over the years.
I have a friend that has a very good male that is about 3 years old. Fine hunting dog.

Only if the breeder is a dick. You put alot of faith in them by paying that far in advance and that should cover any perceived rate increase.
At least that's how I would view it.

How much are they asking for the puppy?

If you paid him the $200 to guarantee yourself the 3rd male pup at a certain price, you've got an argument for an option contract. I don't know the specific law in LA or TX, but you're always better off getting things in writing.

I'd imagine if you sign a spay/neuter contract they would honor the original price. The problem is that every puppy will be shown to a breeder/handlers before being passed over to you. If the litter is a great litter there may be only 1 or 2 non-show/non-breed dogs, so you may not get this litter.

Way too much. I wish I'd have bought a trained lab for $3k. I got my fiancée attached to boykins, she doesn't think $1,500 is absurd. But she said she'd pay for dog if I pay for training.

Apparently the waiting list to get a female from him is long.... Hopefully that's what breeders want. He advised against getting my male fixed.

show folks like picking dogs out up to a month later than the rest of the world takes them home...
BTW.. did anybody see the labs at westminster - they look nothing like what you see in a duck blind, hunt test or field trial..... the one that won the breed looked like a barrel with legs.

started looking for replacements.....
then got call a few days after pups opened eyes... to come pick out pup....as lil chou had first pick...

I paid over that for mine, won some stuff other than circle walking competitions.

Lulz.
$1300-1500 and up is pretty standard for non-lab hunting breeds. I wouldn't feel bad about that.

Unless the breeder is a dick, the point of the deposit is to hold you a puppy at the original price
