Deer population question

For a 500 acre tract. What is the ideal deer population numbers and what is the ideal buck to doe ratio?

A lot is going to depend on the surrounding property, is it field, woods, cutover and if there are surrounding hunting clubs and what type of management program are they on...

It’s only 500 acres so your not holding per say any given number of deer. Probably a lot of deer pass thru, skirt the edges, feed across, bed down on occasion. Buck to doe ratio should always be kept around 1:1 if possible but your not gonna do that on 500. You will have your regulars that do call it home. If that number is 10 to 15 deer that’s on the up side most likely and probably that many more that use the property at any given tome for the things mentioned above.

That depends on a ton of shite you haven’t said. The answer is gonna vary wildly with habitat and surrounding properties.

Need more info, does not compute

I’m interested in this thread also, so consider our place, described as follows:
- 500 ac
- 60/40 hardwoods and various ages of planted pine
- Hardwoods feature lots of mature oaks, especially white oaks
- At least 20 percent of property features can’t-walk-through-it young pine growth
- Several small ponds and two creeks
- No pasture
- Eight 1-4 acre food plots
- surrounded by hunting clubs that we believe manage similar to us...try to get to buck’s fourth year; spread outside the ears; 8 pts or better
ETA: how many total deer would you expect to harvest per year given this set up?

It is a lot easier to account for your doe population, than it would be to account for your bucks. I’d say you have an estimated doe/fawn/yearling/young buck population of 25/35, and 2/3 mature bucks. That’s not to say there are another 20/30 deer that move in and out.

Land is L shaped with 200 acres of planted soybean in the inside the L. Mostly pine plantation with about 100 acres of hardwoods. 2 ponds on the land and a creek that runs through. Only 1 club close to the north. The bean fields not part of the 500. But have access to hunt it anytime. Pine age with oldest 15 years old. Youngest 6.

Looks like the other poster gave you an estimate on your population.
You need to kill about 1/3 of those to maintain the current population.

Go to QDMA. They had a deer density map and that’s what I would start with. Other considerations are
What is your Land? Pasture or hard woods?
Are woods thick or can you see straigh through them?
Food Source? Acorns, blackberry bushes, grasses
How many deer has this property produced?
Neighbors, what they got? Crops, pasture, Woods? What do they want?
Soil type sandy, clay, what can you grow?
Goals, are your goals aligned with your neighbors and members?
Good luck but make sure you have the right expectations.

In the southeast, bucks generally have a home range of about 1000 acres. Does are a little smaller and maybe 600 acres.
I really wouldn’t know how to figure out how many deer I have on my place. Half the time I can’t keep up with how many deer I saw in a hunt and if I’m counting the same does over and over. I have 360 acres and I’ve identified 12 rack bucks so far that I’ve seen in person. That number is higher than what I identified on trail cam.
So if my ratio is 2:1 does to bucks, that would put 36 deer using this property. The previous club would shoot on average 9 bucks a year and 4-5 does.
So plenty cover and food and I’d say any place in this region should see similar numbers
