I shoot the bucks in the neck and the slicks right in thier slick head.

If they are moving or are really far, I shoot vitals.

Only time I've had one so much as quiver was a spike I killed with a .38 SW Model 10 2". Right behind the ear and he went down but I made sure he stayed that way with a follow up.

Missed one with my son once. Blew the doe's lower jaw off. We shot her a week later. She was starving and trying to eat in the plot with no jaw. Does get it in the neck now.

And... this is why I started this thread. Thanks for your input.

This is the main reason I don't head shoot deer. If everything goes right, it's great. But, IMHO, there's too much room for error. When watching deer, I'm amazed how often a deer's head moves; lots of times it's only to a small degree, but enough that would change a nice, clean ear hole shot to a non-fatal jaw shot. If someone's going to use the head shot, they must know their trajectory quite well.

In addition, I hunt w/ scoped handguns that are just not as flat shooting as most rifles. Consequently, the trajectory could get rather tricky for me.

OTHO, my long-time hunting buddy and very good friend now aims for the head shot on does and management bucks whenever possible. He's a very knowledgable hunter and great shot; I respect him greatly, but we just have a difference of opinion.

I aim for the double lung shot. If it's a PM hunt, I like to take out at least one shoulder. I don't usually lose much meat that way and the deer won't go far. The neck shot is also a really good shot that drops deer immediately, but one must know the anatomy very well to make it work.

If you don't like shooting the head but want to keep the meat in good shape, go for a good neck shot. Just shoot near the spine and it'll drop where it stands.

Never tried a head shot, but dropped a many with neck shots. Mostly does but shot a 120" 9pt in the neck. He never kicked.
