I’m headed to Three Rivers area on Monday for a week of hunting in Texas. I’ll be w my son. I’d like to make a stop to buy him a custom made cowboy hat on this trip.

I’m really unfamiliar with hatters so I was hoping to get some recommendations.

Only one I have used is in Fort Worth so unfortunately won't be any help to you. I'm sure you can find a good, small town operation down that way that'll get you a fine hat

Honestly, I'd pick out a Cavender's in Houston and let them guide you on a good first hat. They'll shape and fit properly. If he enjoys it, then look into a more custom later as an upgrade.

They are mass-produced, not custom.

He has LOTS of store bought hats. Felt. Straw. Dark. Light.
He has it all, except a custom made.

Has he stopped growing? I don't know if I'd drop that kind of cash if he is still growing.

I have a bunch of hats and my favorite western traditional hats are from Smithbilt in Calgary. Canada sounds nuts but they are the OG's from the Calgary Stampede which is the real deal, it's like Cold-Texas in Alberta.

It’s about 3 hours southwest, but Catalina Hatters in Bryan, TX is one of the best when it comes to custom felt hats.

Probably stopped growing and old enough to appreciate a good hat. I dont have kids that old so not sure what I would do, but thinking back to my dumba** days you might wait until he is 21-22ish. A good custom hat would be a really nice gift. I've always thought a pair of Alden 403s would be a similar gift that would last a young man a very long time with proper care.

Nathaniel's in Georgetown or Catalena Hatters in Bryan. Too far west but Bronco Sue in Mason makes a really nice custom, as well.
