What's the best way to get on a lease down there? I know you own your place but just asking in case you have good suggestions. nice job on the hunt.

Are those good to eat? Looks like a cross between a deer and elk. Do they get long horns like some of the other exotics?

Posted on 11/21/16 at 8:20 am to SCwTiger
They are great to eat. Really lean. The horns don't get much longer than shown there. Like max 10" long
Posted on 11/21/16 at 8:21 am to NattyLite
If they are free range but non-native how do they regulate them?
Posted on 11/21/16 at 8:22 am to SCwTiger
They are great to eat, better than deer. 10 inches is considered a trophy on the horns.

They are not regulated you can spotlight them and shoot as many as you want.

Damn I am sure it sucks for some habitat standpoints having large exotics in the area but man that sounds great from a hunters perspective. Ton of meat on an animal like that.

I have never seen this many yotes running around. I saw another 6 this am and was able to bust one at about 200 yards.

SoTex leases are usually based on who you know and how much money you have
If the lease has running water, housing, tanks, electricity, and exotics (nilgai, fallow, blackbuck, axis, etc...) be prepared to drop serious coin with restrictions on what you can shoot
Prime white tail areas lease for $30+ per acre often times with stipulations of 1 mature trophy deer, 1 cull, 1 doe, and 1 exotic. Not uncommon for people to pay $5000 - 7500 for a season long lease ... November to January. Some land owners will not include turkey since that is leased out separately to turkey hunters in the spring
Best way to get on a SoTex lease is to know somebody whose in an established lease and looking for new members. Start researching online (huntinglocator.com) and making phone calls. Due to the oilfield situation, lots of leases will be available this Spring. Also be aware of scams and shysters who will show you pictures of 170" deer, and in reality the lease is over run with basket rack 8 pts.
I use to hunt 16,000 acres in Ozona (Crockett Cnty) and within 5 yrs the lease price went from $1200 -> $1450 -> $1800 -> $2200 -> $2500. The land owners were 3 wealthy adults (siblings) who inherited the land when their 90 yr old father passed. They lived in ATX , DAL, and HOU, and knew they had us by the balls. The property had hundreds of natural gas wells and these greedy individuals didn't need our money but cont'd to increase yearly deer lease prices
Hope that helps and best of luck

Damn man ya'll got a serious coyote problem.
Our neighbor just sent my dad these. Not sure if he got a drone or flew his place, but they are pretty cool shots of the house and setup I thought.
