re: Crate training a puppy

Yes, that would a POS move.
Agree with this. You shouldn't even have a 6wk old pup, but since you do you need to understand it is a tiny baby. He needs a place to relieve himself every few hours. If you just crate him and he has to go, he's going to learn bad habits (messing in his crate.) You're setting him up for failure.
If he's going to be left alone for that long, you need to provide him an appropriate place to relieve himself.
A very large crate or an exercise pen that you can fit a dog-appropriate litter box in one corner and his bed in another.

Generally speaking, a puppy can hold its bladder about 1 x its age, i.e. 4 months old = 4 hours.

So half of the crate has his bed and a warm blanket for him and the other is his pee pad and water bowl

You have a pee pad and water bowl and you think you're gonna crate train him?

It was his first day. I told the wife not to put water or food but she’s pregnant and emotional

It's what I do.
Make sure the crate is the proper size. And only have a cheap blanket in it that can be bleached.
Wash blanket every single day.
Pup goes out when I get up. Pup eats in bathroom while I get ready. Pup gets kenneled for an hour until gf lets him out and play for an hour. He goes back in the kennel until 7 pm when I get home. Goes out again for a few minutes Feed him again when he comes in.
He stays out again for an hour. Comes back in and either sleeps on my lap while I read or gets trained. Depending on if he's sleepy or not.
He was PISSED about it at first. Now he likes it.
In another month he can spend his days outside with the gf's dog and then his nights inside with us.

Do you crate him up while y’all sleep too?

Very bad idea. You setting up the pup to fail crate training.

So no water bowl or food tomorrow. Just pee pad. And he should be good for 10-11 hours right without water right?

We never left water for the puppy until he was going all day without peeing

I don't sleep all that much
But yes, I wake him up right before bed, let him out to go to the bathroom. Then put him in his kennel for a few hours while I sleep.
I don't give them free rein of the house at night until they aren't a puppy. For some that's 6 or 8 months. For my livestock dog that was 3 years
He sleeps roughly 4 hours in the kennel at night, and then out for an hour while I'm up. Then the gf gets home and he's out for 2 hours or so. Then down for 6 hours.
Basically he has to be in the kennel for 10 hours a day. But there is a small break built in.
Honestly though, at his age, he eats, runs, craps, and then passes out. Where he passes out doesn't really matter after the second week.

Agreed.
Pee pads are a terrible idea and teach your dog it's okay to piss in the house.
Small blanket in the kennel, wash it every night. With bleach if necessary.
The kennel needs to be large enough for the dog to sleep in, but not large enough that they can shite on one end and lay in the other.
I always get the largest divided kennel and make it larger as time goes on.

We set our dog back with kennel training by being too nice about the situation. Our dog had to be in there for a max of 9 hours during the week depending on what I had to do for the day. I could normally let her out but sometimes I couldn't.
Hopefully your puppy won't be as destructive as mine was. I couldn't leave her anywhere but in the kennel because she would chew something up, including a hole in the middle of the wall in the bathroom. She eventually figured out that she could scoot the kennel to things and pull them into the kennel with her to chew up.
Now, I can leave her in the kennel all day if needed and she doesn't mind. My dog is in the kennel by herself with nothing in there. Sometimes if she has a toy or something close by I'll throw it in. DO NOT USE THE KENNEL AS A PUNISHMENT! I used a treat (a few pieces of her dog food) to get her in there and now when she knows I'm leaving she will go in there by herself and wait on me. I'd say it's a good idea to get the dog to sleep in there too. The kennel can be a safe place for your dog if you train it right.
ETA: No puppy pads should be used. You are telling your dog that it is ok to use the restroom in the house.

Yes.............I forget to close it sometime but my lab stays in. If you crate train them properly they will NEVER piss or shite in crate or house. Mine will be five and she NEVER did either since we got her at 8 weeks.

You're not crate training him. Your telling him to piss and crap where he sleeps, cause he ain't getting out for a while.

Yes. My pup going on 10 months sleeps in her crate next to my bed. It's her safe zone. All I have to do is say, Time for bed. She runs to it. I still have my old dogs crate set up and he lays in it all the time. No door on it. He is over 3 years old.

Just put my 6 month old Doodle back in the crate. We had her blocked off in the hall so she could move around and stretch her legs. Came home to a hole in the wall from her chewing it. They'll adapt. Just make sure it's big enough so they can at least move.
