Crappies ( /'kræpi?/ or /'kr?pi?/)[1][2] are a genus, Pomoxis, of freshwater fish in the sunfish family Centrarchidae. There are two species, the type species Pomoxis anularis, the white crappie, and the black crappie, P. nigromaculatus. Both species are popular game fish.
The genus name Pomoxis derives from the Greek p?µa (cover, plug, operculum) and ???? (sharp). The common name (also spelled croppie or crappé), derives from the Canadian French crapet, which refers to many different fishes of the sunfish family. Other names for crappie are papermouths, strawberry bass, speckled bass or specks (especially in Michigan), speckled perch, calico bass (throughout New England),[3] sac-au-lait (in southern Louisiana, lit "bag of milk")[4] and Oswego bass.[citation needed]

Some of these I haven't heard of like "strawberry bass", but I have definitely heard them referred to as perch before.

There was a push a while back in sportsman's circles to try and get people to start using the Genus/Species names, to avoid such confusion. I don't think it got very far.

Edit: They aren't perch, but people do call them that...

quote:

Perch is a common name for fish of the genus Perca, freshwater gamefish belonging to the family Percidae. The perch, of which there are three species in different geographical areas, lend their name to a large order of vertebrates: the Perciformes, from the Greek perke meaning spotted, and the Latin forma meaning shape. Many species of freshwater gamefish more or less resemble perch, but belong to a different genera. In fact, the exclusively salt water dwelling red drum is often referred to as a red perch, even though by definition perch are freshwater fish. Though many fish are referred to as perch as a common name, to be considered a true perch the fish must be of the family Percidae.
The type species for this genus is the European perch, Perca fluviatilis.

I'm fixing to go to Old River today. I will give y'all a report when I get back.

We caught them yesterday from 6-8 feet, blue and white without a cork on the edge of the trees.

Go fish my pier and tell me if they're biting under it.

Old River
Was there all day Tuesday. Talked to some people that caught two dozen or so. I bass fished from daylight to about 4 and caught one 3lber. Went yesterday and caught 4 bass all about 8 or 10 inches long. Talked to about 6 perch jerkers, and they were having a tough day. Only catching about a dozen but they were decent size
