When I was a kid tromping through the swamp, I went to jump across a small finger of water and saw this:

Mud Snake. Western, I believe.

Looking through the LDWF snake page, there are many snakes that I have never seen despite being in the woods a lot all over the state.

Very harmless. But damn if it doesn't look like some kind of demon snake. I was scared.

The only snakes I ever seem to see in the woods are Copperheads and what we call Coach Whips (have no idea if that's the real name)

I saw a coral snake once when I was a kid. That's about the most obscure snake I've ever seen.

Oh and a pygmy rattler.

where woodmere is now on westbank before it was developed was full of those mud snakes.

had a coral snake as a pet for about a month when I was 9 - thought it was a scarlet king snake...

at least 20 kids handled that snake without getting bit...

haven't seen many coach whips....

Came across one of those mud snakes when I was a kid. It was in a drainage ditch and was eat a eel. Weirdest part was the ditch was from a pond overflow. How the hell that eel got there i'll never know

They usually eat amphiumas, which look a lot like eels but live in ditches.

I've seen very few rare snakes. That mud snake is really cool though. very smooth scales and you cannot make them bite.

I did have a hog-nose for a while as a pet. To this day the only one I've ever seen.

Snakes I've never seen in the wild:

Coral
Racer
Coachwhip
Corn
Banded Watersnake(seent 5 million broad-banded)
Diamond Back Rattler
Pigmy Rattler
Pine
Milk
Scarlet King
Worm

I'm sure others.

Mud Snake

We have one of these. Ours isn't quite as red on the bottom though. He's really kind of boring because he digs under the stuff in his cage and doesn't come out much.

I'd have to go with the Gray-banded King snake (we have one off those too):

It's wild to see one of those on rock cuts in West Texas.

Scarlet Kings/Louisiana Milks are pretty neat to see too--they show up like a little red/yellow flag when you find one. I once watched a herpetologist friend catch a coral snake in Florida; crazy SOB held it by the tip of its tail and told us it wouldn't/couldn't climb back up on itself to bite him. No thanks, I'll pass!

Husband would probably say the coolest he's found is one of the many different types of rattlesnakes, especially the ones in Arizona & New Mexico. His favorite this week is this little girl (how can you tell from a distance?) seen up in Tunica recently (just shed):

Its markings were so vivid it wasn't very camouflaged.

I had a coral snake inside my air conditioner coils on the condenser for my house. Freaked me out when I was weedeating. I've seen a bunch of water snakes, copper heads, grass snakes, and moccasins. Nothing too special.

One of my patients said that she will see ground rattlers in her garden sometimes and says they are very poisonous. What the hell kind of snake is she talking about?

Not very obscure, but definitely rare for me, but I absolutely loved finding tiny ring neck snakes. Probably found one every couple years, but haven't seen one in about 16 or more years now.

Does he come out at night? One site I read said they were nocturnal, but I say this one around mid-late afternoon if I recall correctly. Probably look wicked under some kind of black light or something.

If it's a rattlesnake, which it's not, it's a pigmy. She is seeing a brown snake, worm snake or ring-necked snake.
