Conceal Carry - Renewal

First time poster, long time lurker. Hey Baws!!
I'm almost 5 years in to my conceal carry license so it's time to renew it. I was under the impression that to renew you meet with an instructor and show proficiency by shooting again. I called around (Baton Rouge area) today all but 1 place said I had to take the entire class again. Is that correct? Who do you guys/gals recommend doing the renewal with?

Just renewed mine yesterday. . Took renewal course with an OB’er. Went and shot 50 rounds. Course is not the full course. Upload certificate and picture of drivers license and fill out forms on la state police website. Filed yesterday got approval today. Simple.

No. I took a shortened course even after my license expired.

Thanks for the quick reply. How long did your renewal class last? Do you mind saying who you used? I would like to get in touch with them to see when they have availability.

Try EBR Sherriff's Office. They do a monthly class for $60 at their shooting range

A lot of the instructors are going to the full 8 hour course for renewals due to liability. Their lawyers don't want you to shoot someone and then have it come back on them that they gave you a "half assed" course, even though the law states that is all that is needed.

I don't know about that, and I have not bothered to research the renewal statute. I took my renewal course last year at the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's range, and it was the full course. We were told that the LSP does not allow for the shortened renewal course. I did not mind sitting through the course again, as most of us do not spend a lot of time refreshing ourselves of the laws involved with the legal use of a handgun. I certainly think that if you find a private instructor, you could do it in much less time.

The requirements for instructors for renewal courses is the same as the initial course but does not have a time requirement listed. My main focus in a renewal is covering laws, mindset, child access prevention, and other FAQs. I cover basic pistol knowledge as well and will gauge it for my students, i.e. if someone is a competition shooter they know what a magazine release is; if someone got a crappy initial course or exhibits horrible safety habits I will go through it in its entirety.

But, does this come with an easy to read outline of the process?

This^^^^
Do NOT do any portion of the renewal by mail. I submitted my renewal online, but made the mistake of submitting the copy of my certificate and DL by mail. FOUR months later my renewal was still pending. I finally reached the LSP by phone and found out they were still reviewing the snail mail applications submitted 2 mos before mine. They emailed my application back to me, I attached the scanned DL and certificate and had the renewal 1 month later.

You unfortunately don't get to see my beautiful hands today. Deal with it.
