re: Climbing stand question?

I know I am in the minority here, but my Lone Wolf is the best climber I have ever owned. The way, and where I hunt I need to consider weight of stand. Granted it is not the most comfortable, that is true, but I also use a Loc On Windwalker (5lbs) and Muddy Sticks and that makes the Wolf seem huge and spacious.

I have a summit open shot. It's light and doesn't have a bar in front of it. It's the only stand I use. I don't hunt out of box stands. I did go hunting with a friend this year and borrowed his climber for the hunt since mine was locked up where I hunt and I'm almost positive it was homemade and it was awesome. It was way lighter than my summit, easier to set up and easier to climb in. I offered to buy it but he wasn't going to sell it.

According to the other thread, you should just wedge a 2x6 in a V and hunt that. Otherwise you belong on the OT

They are the best for sure. I'm just not sure they are $150 better than a summit
I love my summit viper. If you want an open front get the open shot. I don't really think that the benefit of the open front is enough to sacrifice the sit and climb of the viper, but that's just my opinion.

I have an Ol' man alumalite. Its easy to carry into the woods and set up but the net seating leaves much to be desired after a couple hours of sitting.

It was proly a stand made by Tugga in bayou piegon. He has been making aluminum climbers for over 25 years. My opinion they are the lightest quietest and easiest to set up and climb day or night. I've been using these for 25 + years tried numerous others nothing comes close. And no I have no ties to him just like his design and workmanship. 225 -659-7782

Screw the tree lovers. Get an old style where the spike sticks in the tree or have a welder modify it. The newer ones are a little dangerous on a real hard wood tree.

I have a summit viper. Best and most comfortable stand I have used and I have been climbing since ammaker made stands out of tallulah. If you can swing it get the foot rest and surround seat for cold weather. Both are worth it and you can call summit and usually buy these for a better price. I talked to " bear" not a bad guy for a gump. Also wear the harness and use while climbing

I have two. A Summit Viper. A larger stand which I put on a tree and leave it. Might change locations 2-3 times a season but to big to really like packing it in and out on a regular basis. Because it's a sit down/stand up climber you can drop the seat down low below the bar and sit comfortable all day without fear of falling out. It's my favorite way to hunt. I also have the Summit Openshot which is a smaller and more portable hand climber. I pack it in and out each hunt and gives me the freedom to hunt remote spots. summit is my choice.

Its always a personal preference. Lots of great stands out there. For me Its 14 pounds vs 20 pounds that makes me prefer the Lone WOlf. I dont think the price diffference is quite that large, more like 280 for the summit and 350 for the Wolf. Also the open front is a necessity when shooting traditional. IMO. But to each his own. :)

Me too. Not sure they are still the same as my old one, acquired in 1998. Very sturdy, lightweight, and feels safe climbing and sitting.
I've hunted ou of the Ol' Man. Did not like it. Felt much flimsier than my API, and on small trees would squeeze my ample belly. If not a fatty, may be OK.
Summit looks OK, but I would worry about the cable being more likely to slip than the API chain. Also has a bigger profile on your back when walking thru the woods.
Whatever you get, a climber is a great way to hunt. You can be mobile, and set up in a new spot every time, where they don't know that you are even in the world.

Good Video. I like the idea of how he hung his steps on his harness like that. I have thought about getting that Lone Wolf hang on. I currently use a Loc On and Muddy sticks for a hang on set up. He was using Lone Wolf sticks which are great but Muddy has the steps on each side of the rail and seem to be as good in quality.

Same here. I use the Lone Wolf Assault and Muddy Sticks. I also bought the Muddy Safeguard harness, and really like it for climbing. Barely know it's there with the small straps and only 1.9#

I don't believe Tugga made it. He said he bought it at a pawn shop in a north la city. Forget which one exactly. I'm not saying it's impossible but highly unlikely. But Tugga is a friend of a friend of mine. I'll get my buddy to contact him and go check out one of the stands he's made and see if they're similar. This stand wasn't pretty and it was very simple but It would be perfect for packing in and out of public land. We hunted the spillway so it was swampy and it was like the stand wasn't even there. Set up and took down way faster than my summit too.

Serious question, is it that hard to find a tree in the woods with no limbs up 20'? They generally grow tall for sunlight before they branch out much. And I find trees I can climb a lot higher, but I'm guessing your limited on height with those lock on rigs.

I like that rig. I am seriously going t look into the LW Assault for next year.

It can be pretty difficult depending on where you hunt and the kind/age of the trees. I prefer to get up closer to 30' if the canopy allows. The higher the better.
I was thinking the same thing, but after watching that video I'm interested in looking into the Lone Wolf and sticks.

I can easily get to around 20" with my rig. I do use my climber on occasion as well. In some areas I hunt I do have challenges finding a good tree where I need it. Either straightness, size or limbs prohibit me being where I wnat to be at times. I have grown to like the Loc on stands more as I have gotten older. :)
