Chosing a trolling motor

I have a 17ft Xpress and I want to upgrade my trolling motor. I currently have a 36lb thrust. When I fish down below Houma my trolling motor is great with handling current and winds. What would be the highest lb thrust I should buy? I don't mind running a 24V system.

I run a 40lb minn Kota on a 16' Cajun special. Works well, we had a 35lb on it before and it was weak in the wind and current. I'd get something like a 50lb or more on it. Buddy has a 24V on his 17' Xpress and I find it works well, he's not a fan of it but he hates the hand control so I think he's just mad at it. Can't remember the thrust on it.

Bigger is better to a point. Just beef it up a little over factory...
My boat came with a 56 lb thrust trolling motor, when it crapped out I went to a 70 lbs. I was already running a 24v system...
It was a great decision. Benefits over a lttle extra cost are more than worth it.

Also, WTF?
Is that like priming an outboard or something?

50+ lb thrust on a 24v system is fine for that boat

After running motor guides for years and having a new minn kota on our bay boat and bass boat I would have to suggest you get a minn kota. The delayed pickup is my favorite thing about it... Plus it'll put less stress on your bow and mount... Not sure if the smaller ones do that or not..?? We have 36v 101lb thrust

I don't notice it, but now that you say that they definitely don't yank on the mount like the old motorguide did. I'll pay attention more next time I take the boat out. Our new one has a shorter shaft than the motorguide did though

The biggest one you're willing to pay for. I like to haul arse.

I switch back and forth from a motor guide to minn kota all the time and I'm always pushing on the wrong side of the damn foot pedal... No matter which one I'm using
(mg switch is on right and mk is on left for those that don't know)

I have an Alumacraft 1860 with a Riptide 12v 55lb 12 volt. I wish I would have gotten the 24v 70 now. My12 works giid but if ur on it hard all day it cant keep up.

I liked the Minn Kota pedal more in theory, but when I got it I couldn't get used to it for anything. I need to spray some wd40 on it and fix how it's positioned compared to the motor right now

Have an H-51 xpress and I upgraded to a 54lbs hand controlled motor guide. I stated with the 12volt system because I didnt want to try and fit another tray and batter in the compartment. I just went with a larger series deep cycle battery for longer life

I have a 24V Riptide SP with I-pilot, and it's the bees knees.

Antley's trolling motor repair in West Monroe can fix just about any issue with a trolling motor. I have a Minkota All Terrain 12v 55# thrust foot pedal that he is converting to a 24v 80# thrust. Its alot cheaper to upgrade your existing trolling motor rather than purchasing a new one. I didn't realize how expensive the new ones were until I started pricing them this week.

Get all you can dude. You can always turn it down. If you need it ..and it ain't got it... Well, ur out of luck. I run a 107 lb 36v on a 19 foot bass boat. And love it.
