I need to replace an Abu cardinal 104 I had on a 7' MH rod that got broken off and a new tip put on. It's really stiff now, I just use it as a catfish and bull red pole and an extra for chicks to use with a cork since they don't know how to set the hook right anyway.

I found the 4000 kinda big but not sure i should downsize for catfish and reds. Want something to hold up to salt for a couple years if I rinse it well immediately after. Most importantly cheap. Not another cardinal though.

Thoughts?

Shimano. I like to buy American, but Shimano reels are sweet.

I would think most non-big box sporting goods stores would have used reels people never came back for. They usually sell them for what they have into them, cheap. Especially spinning.

I keep a couple cheap quantums rigged up for anyone fishing with me. They were 30ish at Academy, I liked those becasue they match the Abu Vendetta rods. They work well, I used one for a long time before I upgraded, all fresh water though.

Quantum Optix I think? I bought one a couple years ago for 20 bucks and it's done pretty good for me.

Yes, thats it, I was trying to find them on Quantums website, couldnt think of the name. They have 4-5 different spool sizes.

Thanks, anyone use them in salt?

The cardinal did fine for a couple years in fresh but lasted 5 surf trips before locking up completely. And I cleaned and lubed after each trip.
