My godfather use to have those on his Chevy Impala back in the 60's. The poor bastard had bad eyesight and would often climb curbs when parking, so he got them to help save his tires.

Every time he parked, he'd turn off the radio so he could hear them scraping the concrete.

I bought a truck that is leveled. I hate hauling anything in the bed because now it looks like I have some dumb squat to it.
