Looked thru some old threads and got bits of information. We were supposed to do Black Creek paddle camping trip this weekend. Unfortunately, due to Covid, all the landings along the black creek are closed since they are in the De Soto National Forest. Thinking of putting in at LA Hwy 37 (Greenwell Springs Road) on the Amite and doing the trip down to near Magnolia Bridge. 22 river miles which is the same length of trip we were going to do on Black Creek. Would camp somewhere around halfway which would be near the Live Oak Baseball Complex.

4 of us (41, 41, 16, 14) with 2 in a canoe with most of the gear and 2 others in kayaks. My parents live in Pride, so they could drop us off and pick us up. Appears to be possible to put in from LA Hwy 37. Can someone confirm? Have friends who live on Amite River almost to Magnolia Bridge and can pull out on their property. Lots of sandbars on the route.

Negotiated a launch spot with a friend of a friend of a friend. Pushed off Saturday morning about 10:30. Paddled, fished, and hung out until reaching our desired camping spot at 5 pm. Went about 12 miles Saturday. Good Day. Saturday night it rained from 6 pm to 4 am despite a 0% chance of rain when we pushed off saturday. Didn't bring extended tent rain gear, so Saturday night was miserable. Went the final 10 miles Sunday to our pull out. Son ended up catching 5 bass and I caught a couple. Water got muddy about 7 miles in due to someone doing some earthwork that was draining into the river. Cleared up further downriver on Day 2. Everyone had a good time, would have been a great trip without the rain...

April rains are here. Watch where you pick to tent. Dont want to wake up with water in your tent

I was supposed to hit up the colorado river this weekend in bastrop TX for an over nighter. Check the weather north and watch the gauges

What about putting in Highland Road Park at the new kayak launch at the BREC? You could take out at Fred's or keep going to the Dock at Hwy 16.

Yep, just wish they'd put in a takeout at either Airline Park, or the park on Old Jefferson. They very well may have plans for that in the future.

ETA:

quote:

Proposed Launches 2019/2020:
Access to Bayou Manchac at Manchac Park
Access to Wards Creek at Airline Highway Park (Fairgrounds)

quote:

Future Launches:
Connect Wards Creek to Bayou Fountain via Oschner Surgical Center
Connect Airline Highway Launch to Comite River at Waddell – would require property acquisition and permits/JUA from DOTD
Connect Airline Highway Launch to Blackwater – would require property acquisition and permits/JUA from DOTD
Comite River Diversion project - will need to discuss with Garrett Graves and others

Also, Here's a link to PaddleBR's map of Baton Rouge waterways. That group has been working their butts off clearing waterways, etc.

We've done that paddle almost down to Bayou Manchac. Looking for something with more sandy type river bottom and sandbars to camp on.

It has been several years, but I have taken out at Hwy 37 several times.

We have pitched tents on a sandbar before without any incident.

The hwy 37 bridge is a no go. It's very steep on the upriver side. There is no good way to the bars south of the bridge even if you ignored all the no trespassing signs. the other side is a power line and you would have to drag your boats over some fencing. Check the google street view and you will see why.

I've been trying to arrange a legal takeout spot down river from me for years without much luck. The only way to get out at magnolia beach is behind frogs or drag a boat across someones driveway. There is no access at all on the west side of that bridge.

The only legal take out I am aware of is the French town road park. It's like 8/10th of a mile from the river to the parking lot but it's doable. I may be able to help you out with a launch spot but that only gives you 11 miles from put in to French town.

Anyone know how landowners are in that section regarding use of the sandbars? Technically legal to camp, but some people can be difficult. Would camp as close to the river as possible.

The bars are perfectly legal. Check your camp spots carefully. You would be surprised how close some homes are to the water.

Bookmarked.

Anyone know if there are any spots to take out south of I-12 and before big Johns? Big Johns is private now and the river really slows down near there

I’ll trade you (or anyone here) a spot to put in or take out halfway between the 37 and 10 bridges for turkey hunting rights on a piece of property with a bunch of turkeys.

Dead serious. If it’s a good enough turkey place you can launch anytime you want.

Would love to Tenfoe, but I don't have access to anything that fits the bill. Have 2 turkey hunters in extended family and they kill everything we have access to, which isn't much.

Where you in a Gheenoe? I think we chatted for a second a little ways south of sandy creek.

Small world. Glad it worked out for you.
