Some rattlesnakes are getting rid of their rattle. Obviously rattlers are a dead giveaway and decrease their longevity around humans. The rattlesnakes without the rattlers are increasing in proportion.
I'm only aware of one population on an island off the coast of mexico that have physically lost their rattle. But, there is a theory that snakes that USE their rattles less are living to procreate and pass those genes on. If this continues on for thousands, or a million years, others may indeed lose their rattles.

I saw this on some tv nature program quite a while back but cursory glance show me it is happening regionally. South Dakota looks like it is getting the nonrattler rattlesnakes pretty good.

Never killed a 2 footer with 10 rattles and never killed a 5+ footer with 2 rattles. Guess our snakes don't google.
I've found a 3 footer will 8 rattles, and a 5 footer with 3 rattles.

Those snakes are simply not rattling. It doesn't say they are not growing rattles.
