I think it would be cool and educational to see what everyone is getting on camera across the board. Two, it keeps everything in one spot and reduces the number of threads started. Three, if and when people capitalize, we can get accurate measurements/ages and see how far off we were in our assessments.

Obviously, it’s not all about score but assessing and aging mature deer. Everyone’s situation is different so it would be encouraged not to talk shite about others’ trophies.

Thoughts?

ETA : there should be some basic info provided like what part of the country you’re in and/or type of habitat. No, we’re not dropping pins. Obviously, if you’re super secretive and people know where you hunt, don’t post it if you don’t want people to see it. If anyone has suggestions for protocol, let’s hear it.

Science has shown that attempts for age deer on the hoof are futile. Aside from 2.5 or younger, it is almost impossible to accurately age deer based on photos or even in person encounters. Too many factors influence the outward signs og body condition, body size, body shape, antler shape, growth or size. Unless you have year over year pics showing the same deer aging year after year, you're likely pissing in the wind.

While I agree to a point, and if it is indeed futile, why do we still attempt to do it?

Because it’s fun. Do you hate fun things?

A wild game cooking sticky is a great idea too.

I could use it. I’ve posted a couple already. Certainly think it would be educational for all hunters throughout the board.

These are Suburban Atlanta deer. Clayton county specifically.

If nothing else, it’s interesting to get so many opinions. Let’s say you’ve got seven people that think he’s 4-1/2 and another 5 that think he’s 6. Only a couple think he’s 3-1/2 or so. Guess what? You’ve got yourself a shooter. Now, if you hunt a spot that’s 30 acres, obviously letting anything over 2-1/2 walk could be risky. Everyone’s deal is different. I just think it would be a cool idea and it could double as a grip n grin thread too since everyone here is basically a PH.

Agreed Hop.

The deer I just posted are in less than 20 acres when the show up. Still think it’s cool to get everyone’s opinion. There was a deer I hunted last year, swore he was 5 1/2. Nope 3 1/2 146. Friend shot him. Had a range of guesstimates...

That’s honestly a good one to start with, but let’s iron out details or figure out what the board wants first. Without any other info, I’d guess 2.5 on both of those deer. Maybe 3.5.

Louie, your thread is what made me think to do it.

Don't like stickies. After a while, it's like they are not there.

The outdoor game cooking board would be prime. Seems like they had one already though at some point? Could be mistaken.

Not at all. Quite the opposite. I dont want someone making a
"management" deciaion on a deer that is they have no real data on.
Ok

Dude, if someone comes here and uses our opinions as gospel that’s on him. It’s deer hunting, not A QDMA competition. If someone kills a deer and it makes them happy, who cares? It’s not that serious.

In a hunting lease situation, harvesting deer by trying to determine age is a disaster.

I think it’s funny that when looking at trail cam pics 75% of the time people say the deer is 2.5. We like to imagine that a deer with a thin basket rack is young and will be a good one in a couple years but reality is especially in Louisiana, that may very well be a 4-5 year old deer and has maxed out the genetics and nutrition.

That’s why I suggested providing a little more info when posting a pic.
