Can I use a LA fishing license if I'm going offshore, but leaving from MS port?

Just wondering how the law felt about this situation.

This has come up before. I think if you are fishing LA waters only then you are fine. Don't stop to catch bait in MS on your way out though.

be pretty retarded to come back to a MS dock unable to prove where you were fishing and didn't have a MS license... of course you were fishing LA waters at that point... of course....

So is Thunder Hawk in LA, MS, or international water?

Happens in Bay St. Louis all the time. Most everyone fishes biloxi marsh which is LA waters. A certain poster here is more familiar with the rules as he does it a lot but my undertanding is as long as you don't stop to fish in MS then you're good to go. You could in theory bring 25 specks back to MS even though the limit there is 15.

I fish out of Diamondhead, MS
I only have a LA fishing license, been stopped numerous times with no issues

The international waters is the difference here, I don't fish offshore so I cant answer the question.
The other folks that said you can leave from Sippi and fish in LA and keep LA limits as long as you don't fish in Sippi are correct but your question is different.

Yeah I guess I was thinking he was asking if he could go snapper fish in LA waters and return to MS.
I'm having trouble finding any info on it but I'm thinking if you go from MS state waters, to federal, back to MS and LA isn't ever involved, then you're gonna need a MS saltwater license.
This is the best I can find. As long as you have all your federal permits it looks like you may be ok. From what I can gather, any state salt water license meets the requirement for fishing in federal waters so you must have one from somewhere. On a state by state basis, they can decide if you're allowed to bring federal fish back to port while not holding that state's license. LA and MS seem to allow it, Texas does not.
quote:
Recreational fishermen not fishing in Mississippi waters may transport and land fish that meet the minimum size and creel limits of the waters in which they were legally caught. Said recreational fishermen must possess a valid salt- water sportfishing license as may be required in the waters where the fish were caught. In the absence of minimum size or creel limits in another jurisdiction, Mississippi law will prevail.

if you are fishing federal waters you must possess a license for whatever port you return to
if you leave a MS port but fish LA waters you only need a LA license as long as you don't wet a line in MS. If you catch bait or see birds diving and toss a single line in MS you must possess a MS license and size limits. We've had to zoom in on the GPS a few times to check whether we were in LA or MS before casting at bird action

If you have any Endangered Red Snappahs on board I would get any liscense that one could deem necessary just a CYA precaution.
If its just for inshore species the above posts have explained it well.

Your LA license is fine to leave and return to MS as long as you do not wet a line in MS. The only tricky part is LA requires an offshore landing permit and MS requires you to download and use the tails and scales app. To fish LA and return to MS you must do both.
