Was driving a PBR way the hell up a branch off the river and got lost. So here we are in a camo boat bristling with M-60s & M2s when we spot a guy parked by a little bridge fishing.
"Hey, what town are we nearest"
Fellow say "A Bear".
I was new to LA. Looked on the map. Nothing of the sort. Still lost.
Spotted another fellow. Same conversation. Not on the map. I yell back over to the shore..."How do you spell that?"
"H-E-B-E-R-T.....A Bear!"

3. I remember the folks from Lutcher/Paulina talking about a person being "ki you" (have no idea how to spell it. It meant "rock" supposedly, like that person was hard headed.

Lived in Laplace from ages 11 - 18ish. Due to the political nature of my dad's job, he got to be friends w/some of the larger land owning families up and down the river.
If that's your area, you understand that as you get upriver, and further from New Orleans, the contiguous land ownership also gets a little bigger.
In La Place, pretty much only the Montegut family still owned what I would call a "big block". As you went upriver though, and got around Lutcher/Paulina/Grand Pointe, there were still several families that owned what I would call "big blocks".
All the stories I'm telling (pretty much all of them) involve one of those families. I'm sure he's dead now, the patriarch's initials would have been TM. He lost a son with initials DM.
You know who I'm talking about?

a note for reference..
things that did not exist prior to cajuns coming from Nova Scotia.... have whatever names they were assigned..
ie.. there were no lawn mowers.. hence no cajun word for lawn mower.... just lawn mower...

My maw maw and pawpaw who live in back da point still speak it. It died with my mom's generation other than the few words we all know. I feel cheated and now my kids will be forced to learn spanish eventually.

They started a deal in La Place, years ago, to actually teach it elementary school. Pretty sure the initiative died out though. This would have been in the 70's.

possibly...if the families you're talking about owned large blocks of land as in cane fields or tobacco fields then i could probably take a good guess

My grandparents generation was the last of the cajuns to have french as a first language.

Doe Doe, Prolly not spelled right. My gmaw hardly spoke english and this is what she would say for "time for bed" as in " Time to go Doe Doe." I also had a teddy bear named that cause I would sleep with it.

Wife's grandmother spoke it fluently, so she picked it up. When we first started dating, she walked into Belle River grocery with a bikini top and skirt on and these two white haired coon asses started talking about her in a very lewd fashion in Cajun. She whipped around and started chewing their asses, those old bastards jaws dropped.
I know, csb.
