Buying my first pistol. Anyone own a Ruger SR9c? Opinions?

I'm looking to buy my first pistol and am leaning towards the Ruger SR9c based on various internet reviews. Looking to spend less than $500 for my first pistol. Want it for basic home defense.
Does anyone own one? Would you recommend it or something else. Also, where can I buy it? Academy doesn't have it in, seems hard to find. Does Cabellas or that other huge outdoor place in Denham? Thanks.

I don't own that one but I've owned a Ruger P89 9mm for years and love it. Ruger makes a good pistol and you should not go wrong on this one.

I've got a P245 that's pretty sweet.
I keep it in the truck, and it fits in my hand well.

Will you carry or keep at home? I bought the sr9c the last no tax day and love it, but plan on carrying it. If not going to carry get sr9 imho. I agree Ruger is a good choice.

Unless I'm mistaken, Glock's don't have external safeties, so if you have any kids around, that's an issue. Beretta Px4 Storm is a good Glock substitute with that external safety.

Don't chamber a round, that's a fool-proof safety.

also, I noticed you mentioned you are buying your first pistol. I highly recommend you first go to a firearms expert and get training, maintenance, and use training. Also, try out different styles, makes, and calibers of pistols to see what fits you best. The most important thing though is the training... please for your sake and the sake of others get training on how to safely own a pistol before you actually own a pistol.
As for the comments about buying a Glock over a Ruger, Glocks are fine weapons. I've owned and used them. But don't buy one just because someone on a message board tells you to. The vast majority of people who own Glocks do so only because the name is popular. Like I said, try different ones and go with the one that you feel most comfortable with. So long as you stay with the more reputable manufacturers like Ruger, Taurus, Glock, Browning, Beretta, Smith & Wesson for example, you will be getting a good quality firearm.

Buy a Luger. Rugers are for poosies.

I dont think you will be disappointed, not my only handgun, but one of my favorites.

Safeties aside, if one has children, one should do what one can to keep the firearm safely out of their little hands.
Safties can be flipped off.
A safety is no guarantee against negligent discharge.
I suggest something from the fine line of Glock firearms.
The GEN4 G17 is what I carry the most.

Guess i will add, have you held this one or any other. How it feels in your hand is an important factor. I dont care for Glocks, not because the saftey issue, they dont fit my hand very well.

Get a shotgun for home defense.
If you're dead set on a handgun, don't get a compact unless you plan on conceal carrying.
A full size will be easier to shoot.
Look into Springfield XD, S&W M&P or hell even the full size ruger.
