Buying house with a pool

Looking at buying a new house and it will more than likely be our forever house. I’ve been looking for houses with pools because I do not want to build one and incur that expense, when I can buy one with one already built. In doing this it definitely limits our options when we know what area we want to be in. What are some opinions or suggestions on this topic?

Pools actually make homes harder to sell so that may be an advantage to you.

I don’t know about making it harder to sell but pools typically increase the value by 5-10 k. In Louisiana. But to the op Fiberglass, granite then liner.

My wife and I just bought a house with a pool. A decision we never will regret. Once you learn how to maintain the pool you'll be fine. The pool is the center point of our outdoor activities In the summer months. Good luck on your purchase.

Pools will not increase the value of your house. Most people do not want to deal with the hassle

I do not mind the upkeep once I get it in a good spot. I have a young son and we want to build an outdoor kitchen/cooking area. So we will be outside a lot.

Pools shrink your potential buyer pool (no pun intended). They also may or may not add value to the property. Generally you do not recoup 100% of the costs associated with installing a pool.

I understand, that’s why I’m looking for a house with one already built, that way someone else incurred that cost. Instead of buying a house I will be in for a long time and having to install a pool.

parish assessors do not take pools into consideration. real estate appraisers do consider them but hold their value as neutral because half the potential buyers want one and the other half does not want one - UNLESS there is a really special condition.

if its going to be your forever home wouldn't you rather have the house you want first, and worry about the pool later?
I agree that you can take advantage of a home with a pool since the value is not 1:1 when installing vs selling but to me I would never let a pool be the deciding factor of where im going to live the rest of my life.

This is true. I'd venture to guess a seller won't see 50% of the cost of installing a pool when time to sell. Then add to that the additional cost of homeowner's insurance for having a pool with the liability attached to it.
A friend of mine had a large in-ground pool with a diving board and once he removed the board, his premiums went down a pretty good bit.

Don't let anyone scare you off from a pool if that is what you want. I never grew up with a pool and didn't take care of one until an adult when I bought a house with one. It's not that much effort and not that expensive once you figure out what you are doing. The key is to stay on top of it, if you travel for work and are out of town a lot when it is hot, then it might be a big hassle. I don't know how much it adds to my utility bill since the pool was there when I moved in, but my bill isn't very high compared to neighbors without a pool. As far as chemicals, again it only gets expensive when you don't stay on top of it

Its like getting your wife new titts... its going to need some more work done 10-12 years later.

Look at installing a saltwater system. Lower maintenance
Educate yourself on maintenance troublefreepool.com is your friend
Save some bucks on the side for resurfacing every 5-10 years
Build a gate around it for a few years - several options available, but you insurance and sanity will thank you. Lots of children drown in pools
Profit??
We weren't looking for a pool when we bought out house, but really love having it

Tomorrow’s game will be the first one too chilly to watch from the pool Need a heater so bad. I may get drunk enough to try anyway maybe it’s not too cold.

Couple crawfish pots of boiling water might warm it up a degree or two. Sounds like a fun way to pass the time drinking and boiling water for the pool all day
