So I am pretty sure its my best interest to purchase a diesel pickup.

I am looking for something as a secondary vehicle/truck for towing my boat, long trips, and general truck use around the house. I need something that will be reliable and last. I don’t mind putting some money into it to beef it up, but not really looking for performance gains, just reliability. Secondary, I am looking for a truck with the biggest crew cab.

With that said I am looking in the range of 12-25k.

Any recommendations for models? Also what should I look for when purchasing a used diesel(I am new to diesel)

I have 2 one ton fords with less than 100k and a dodge 3/4 ton with the cummins and over 300k. I can't keep the fords on the road. Problem after problem with one of them the other isn't to bad. At about 90k I had to replace the injector pump on the dodge but that is it. The fords will haul arse, the dodge is pretty slow.

You could buy a 99-03 Ford with the 7.3 in that price range, probably two of them actually. They're insanely reliable and will last for many years to come. Also the 5.9 Cummins wouldn't be a bad option. I'd stay away from the Ford 6.0's. You might be able to find a Ford 6.4 in that price range. They're good engines, just get crappy mileage stock.

6.0 but it isn't just the engines. Everything from tranny problems to lug nut studs.

At what point on these engines do they require a major service, outside the oil changes.

At no point. I have a 7.3 with 180k on it and only burned up the torque converter from pulling stuff I shouldn't have been pulling. I know of quite a few well over 300k without issue. I think 400k must be a wall, because I don't know of any with 400k+.

OP, get a '02 or '03 7.3L powerstroke with under 100k miles. You can get one loaded with leather and like new for well under $20k and it'll outlast any new truck that would cost 3x more.

Meh regular service and they'll keep on going forever. I had an 03 F350 w/ a 7.3 that I just sold to a buddy to buy a '12 F250. It had roughly 140,000 miles and only major issue I had was the HPOP took a shite but that was my fault. I put a chip on it and was hot rodding it a bit too much. Other than that it was a great, trouble free truck. Honestly it'll be hard for any diesel to live up to the standards, in terms of reliability, of the 7.3. The first diesel in our family was a 97 F350 with the 7.3. When we sold it it had 230,000 miles, only issue being a transmission. I still see that truck about once a month. Still kicking on the orginal engine with 400k+ on the clock.

ETA: My 03 7.3 had a chip, intake, and 4" turbo back straight exhaust. As long as you don't dog on them it'll be just fine. It also bumped my mileage quite a bit. 20-22mpg interstate, 16-18 in town and about 10-14 depending on what I was towing. Granted it was a crew cab, long bed, 2wd single wheel. My '12 barely does 15mpg highway.

Dodge. My 2500 has a lil over 200K on it now and all I've done is changed oil and fuel filters. If you do go with the Ford's make sure its got a 7.3 in it. I've always been a Cummins guy when it comes to diesels, but that 7.3 is a dang fine motor

cough cough bullshite cough.
The truck before my current Dodge was a 2001 with the 5.9. It stayed above 20 mpg and it was 4x4 with an automatic. I've never seen a Ford anywhere close to 20 without chipping it. Mine was stock

I hate those things. Our family owned 2 of them, an 05 Lariat dually and a 06 King Ranch dually. They pulled well they always had that "blow up at any minute feel". When the 06 was traded it it was losing coolant(sign of head stud issues) with less than 50,000 miles on it. I have no desire to ever own one, regardless if it's been fixed or not.

It's pretty tough to beat a 5.9 Cummins when it comes to reliability...

A lot of people swear by the older Ford diesels too though. (not the 6.0).

The problem with the dodges is that the 5.9 is great, but the rest of it is a dodge.

I would like to add that comfort and ride, the ford is better imo than the dodge. But reliability hands down the dodge. My dodge rides rough as hell, it's stiff and every little bump feels like a speed bump, and will get stuck in wet grass. I swear it would pull the gates off of hell though if I could get hooked to them. If it is just light use I would say go with the ford if you plan on abusing it like I do my trucks go with a dodge.
