8 year old. Want it to be a rifle I can also use
I already have a scope for it. Can y’all walk me through either a gun that comes threaded, or exactly what to buy and do to put the can on it
Walk me through buying it, threading it, getting the “stamp” etc
Thanks
I’m a bird dog guy so some help is appreciated
If anyone wants to come shoot some birds over him let me know

Does Tikka compact tactical come in 7-08? I would look there. Something with a shorter barrel.

I’m pretty clueless about rifles.

Does spiral barrel mean it’s threaded?
If so what’s the next steps for a can etc

No need for the call of duty cosplay, just buy some quality hearing protection.

Both rifles linked are threaded 5/8-24.

From a recoil perspective would it make any sense to add a can to the river that already has the muzzle break?

Might also add Browning and Howa to your list, both are decent quality

A muzzle break will reduce recoil. A silencer will reduce recoil and sound.
The guns mentioned are all good. Another option is a savage youth model and have it threaded. Usually 75-150 at a gunsmith. If going with a can, you will need a 5/8-24 thread.

I also have a Pudelpointer. Where do you hunt the pheasant?

Brake.
A muzzle brake is why the rifle is so damn loud.

1. Buying a gun and finding a gunsmith you trust to chop, recrown, and thread the barrel in a quality way is not that easy. I’d just recommend buying one threaded.
2. Buy a can with HUB (1-3/8x24) threads on the rear end. It may not seem important now but it gives you the most options for mounting.
3. Don’t get a barrel longer than 20”. Even at 20” a pretty small suppressor can make the gun be unbalanced. My threaded tikkas are 16” and 18” and balance nicely.
4. Don’t get too hung up in all the sound science stuff. It’s really cool information but there is really only hearing safe and not. Read those things and pick one that ranks pretty good, has hub threads, doesn’t weigh more than 12 ounces, is shorter than 7”, and fits your price point.
Shorter version, in your shoes, I would probably buy a Ruger American gen 2, it has a 3 position safety for the kid, 20” barrel, and a nice barrel profile/fluting so it should balance nicely. I’d be looking at a AB-10 7.62($500), Enticer s ti($750), hydrogen-s($850), silencerco scythe-ti($950), nomad ti xc ($1000) and upward if you want a thunderbeast or something. You can also google those like “hydrogen-s vs.” and you’ll get years of internet arguments comparing different cans. You won’t find many or any negative reviews for otter creek labs, AB, silencerco, or thunderbeast.
Just go somewhere with a silencer shop kiosk and buy one. There’s better and more complicated ways to buy one with a comprehensive trust but it’s the easy button by far.

Since it comes with a muzzle break, would buying nice ear protection cover me? Or would getting a silencer still reduce recoil even further than the break can?

First thing to do is list your budget for the rifle or overall budget. Don’t be afraid of barrels longer than 20” for a can. I don’t have anything shorter than that and they balance well. A lot of it will depend on barrel profile and can metallurgy. If you’re both going to shoot it the biggest factor will be the LOP and its adjustability.

On a 7mm-08 the cans with a brake like the Magnus-RR family probably won’t be much beyond a good can to begin with. They were meant for magnums. I can’t tell much of a difference in recoil on my 6.5CM with my regular Magnus. You can feel the recoil increase on the shorter cans, but they still do a great job of reducing recoil. For a kid I think the sound suppression is just as, if not more important than the recoil reduction. A braked can may do more on a lighter weight gun, but I haven’t gotten to try it yet compared to my heavier comp style builds.

Recommendations for gunsmiths in the mandeville area?

I would get quality ear protection regardless. Hearing damage is irreversible and quality muffs are cheap.
I don’t have any idea how those holes are directing the gas. It looks like a normal radial brake which wouldn’t be too much louder and wouldnt reduce recoil that much. There is probably some info on the internet about that brake but I wouldnt take chances with my ears.

I think he’s asking about the brake that comes on the Ruger American.
Edit: I see what’s happening here. You’re asking if you even need a suppressor when a rifle comes with a brake. An effective(directional) brake is much louder for the shooter than a bare muzzle and the best option for reducing recoil. A suppressor makes the gun much quieter and reduces recoil but not as much as a decent brake.
The radials that come stock on guns are usually basically a cool looking thread protector that doesn’t reduce recoil that much. I don’t know anything about that one.
