Will the hull be completely filled with foam?

About 800-900 on just the hull with no accessories.

With the motor about 3000. Of course the final cost will depend on what kind of motor you put on it

All of it will be filled except for the 2 forward-most compartments. Those will have hatches for dry storage.

Looking good. How "finished" are you planning on going? I have built several hybrid duck boats and have used canvas and paint, canvas and titebond and sho nuff fiberglass but I was never overly concerned with having a "factory" finish. I have a 13 foot low side Gheenoe I have owned since 1984 and I am thinking about putting a sole in it, raising the gunwales to just about level from the stern to the bow (close to what a high sider of the era would have been from the factory) and extending the transom with what would amount to a outboard bracket but the idea of finishing fiberglass to a "factory" finish is daunting. If you look at some of the builds on BBC the finish work is AMAZING....but it has to take a BUNCH of effort....

Thats a nice build. jealous. If you glass then entire thing, that is were the real work comes in. The bondo is never ending.

I built a wooden "MiniMax" in high school. basically 2 sheets of plywood. I only fiber glassed the edges of the boat and blended them in. the rest i used 2 part epoxy paint. Of coarse this was a play around boat and not something i was doing any hardcore fishing in. the 5 hp would push it 15 mph or so. And after I got bored with the 5 hp on it, I put a stand up jetski motor in it for shits and giggles. It really came alive after that. You would sit behind the engine, over the impellor.

Not me but what it looked like with the 5 hp,

Mine after the conversion:

What do you plan on building?

17-18’ with 2 degrees of dead rise, oversized spray rails, 70-90 tiller. Still in the early planning phases on what I want. Will probably start actually drawing the skiff out in 6 months or so once I hammer down all the details I want.

Reds, not a criticism at all but I’m curious with so many good technical skiff manufacturers, why make your own? Do you feel like someone doesn’t offer what you want? Or do you think you will save money? For fun?

I have a 21 Kenner that I love but I’d like to do some glass work to fix my gripes I have about it. I won’t commit to doing it because it would basically be burning money as i wouldn’t ever recover any of what I put in. Not that boats are an investment.

I’ve always wanted to design and build my own skiff and my long term goal is to start up my own fiberglass boat company. I have a Master’s in Naval Architecture and deal mostly with work boats but I want to start diving into smaller skiffs on the side. I definitely believe I can save a lot of money vs buying a Hell’s Bay for $50k+ and have an equal, or better, skiff.

That’s a cool idea. With so much fishing going on down here I’m surprised we don’t have many fiberglass boat companies in the state. Good luck!

My GSP would be over that fence in the blink of an eye.

Nice! I’ve said for a while now I’d love to build skiffs/flats boats in SELA, but I’d have no idea what I’m doing.

Mine would too if he realized he could do it. He’s jumped into the bed of my truck with the tailgate up.

I’ll fair it until all the major divots are taken care of. I’m not gonna do it to a professional level, but I want to decrease the drag to a reasonable level.

How old is he? It took mine a little while before she got the courage to jump our fence- shock collar be damned. It was the possums that got her to do it.

He’ll be 3 at the end of November. He’s a nervous dog and needs some coaxing, so we’re not gonna coax him into that. Lol.

Great project and jealous. Are your going to put a flap in that self bailing hole? I’d think you could find some sort of rubber or other material that prevents splashing from the outside but allows water to drain?

Other builders haven’t had a problem with water coming back in unless they go over the max weight.
