Guys - I'm heading up to Bryson City for a week with the family and want to take the kids to do a little stream/river wade fishing. I think we have a couple people that fish up there - anyone have any suggestions on where to go? Is it as simple as anywhere there is access, just jump in and go? No fly fishing, spinning reels only (I cannot imagine dealing with 3 kids trying to fly fish). Littlest is 6, so looking for some easy access (short hike in is fine). Any help yall can lend is appreciated!

Since you're fishing with little ones, look at fishing the Cherokee reservation. You'll have to get a separate license, but they liberally stock many of the waters.

Thanks, that looks promising. I looked into a couple trout farms, but you have to keep what you catch and at $5/pound and three kids that can fish, that's gonna add up fast!

Links mentions renting tackle, which would be nice to not have to cart rods/reels up there.

Hit up the NOC and do some kayaking or rafting. Food is really good at their restaurant too, River's End.

I only fly fish up there, but you need to make sure you have the correct licenses for where you are fishing. Some require stamps or day passes like the Cherokee trophy section, but the trophy section is fly fishing only. If you fish on reservation property, you have to get the license through them as well.

Need to make sure you are using the correct tackle for the areas as well. I never have this issue because I fly fish, but places like the national park has rules about the amount of hooks and you can only use artificial bait. If you fish the national park, you only need a NC or TN license to fish on either side of the national park. This only applies within the national park boundary though.

you can rent a party barge and fishing boatson Fontana lake. Many more types of fish than creek fishing

And you don't have to pay that stupid fee to the cherokee indian tribe.

Brings lots of cash if you decide to take this route.

The trout will bite the hook as soon as it hits the water. They can clean out your wallet in 15 minutes.

Yeah I’m not doing that shite. No catch and release. Crazy.

Figured out the license and stamps. The park you can only have one hook on your lure. Will likely just fish the Rivers and creeks around town and deep creek. Maybe Fontana lake.

Thanks everyone for the help.

+1 on fishing Cherokee. Easy roadside access and kid-friendly wading on the reservation.

Another option: Delayed Harvest section of Upper Nantahala (above the power station where the rafts put in). Easy access/wading, and it was last stocked on July 23. Lower Nanty between NOC and the power station is fishable after power generation has stopped and the water levels recede (late afternoon). Just be careful, the Lower Nanty is big water for little guys to wade.

Other suggestions for kids: Ice Cream at Soda Pops, Pizza on the deck at Anthony’s, Inner-tubing Deep Creek. If you do Cherokee, be sure to drive up 441 to the GSMNP Visitor Center – always a good chance you’ll get to see some elk in the meadow.

Thank you. Is the area around NOC good for the kids for just plain old swimming/wading? They are all swimmers, though they may opt out when they experience the temps. Ha.

Definitely doing the Deep Creek tubing, and a hike up the deep creek trail to the falls. My youngest is only 6, so is aged out of the NOC rafting. But a couple outfits run little-kid friendly trips on the Tuck, so will probably do that one day. Also plan to drive up through the park to hit Clingmans, maybe also Archie's bald if my little one's legs make it, and Elkmont. Want to hit Cataloochie as well. Want/need to go south and for short hikes and falls, and a day at Asheville and Biltmore.

I would not suggest the NOC as a destination for wading/swimming. Serious current most of the day, can be a little hectic, and Class 5 rapids a little ways downstream. If you happen to be there, there is an area across the footbridge where kids do splash around a bit. Deep Creek is where I would prob go for a swim.

Sounds like a great trip... Enjoy!

Thanks brother! Can’t wait. My goal is to get the kids interested enough to start making some long weekend camping trips up there or better yet, some backpacking. I’m already planning to head up by myself for 3-4 days next spring.
