Well boys, this is the best and worst feeling in one hunt. This buck is about 7 feet from my camera here facing my lock
On.

He veered left to turn broadside when I drew, but kept waking. Before the thicket I let the arrow fly slightly angled but could still hit behind the shoulder blade. However, heart beating out my chest, I let the arrow fly and it stuck into him. Great feeling as a hit, but then noticed it didn’t come out. First thought is dang I got him in the shoulder. I called my brother, and waited an hour before looking. Tracked from 8:30-1:45 and hit a dead spot on small blood drops. Then went back at 3-5:15. I made a question mark, no pun intended, by dropping pens on HuntWise for location and times I stopped and found new blood.

I woke up this morning still sick. I just hate that I haven’t found the deer, could still be alive. Anyone with something similar happen?

where are you hunting ? Are tracking dogs allowed ? I doubt the lungs were hit, possibly opposite shoulder bone which prevented a pass thru. Go find the nearest water or watch for buzzards. If temps <40* , meat may still be good

I’m in Shreveport. That’s what I was told is look for the buzzards. How Long until after . Unfortunately the temperature got in the 60’s yesterday afternoon while I was out there. So the meat is probably bad by now (if he did die). I just want closure knowing he did die and not struggling on out of appreciation. Also, it was the best deer I’ve ever shot in my career of bow hunting.

Fixed or mechanical broadhead?
Bow/arrow set up?
How far was shot?
Blood Color/consistency?
Where was deer headed...bedding area, uphill, towards water?

One thing I always do is mark the blood trail with tissue paper. Helps to develop a heading on the deer and where he is going after the shot. Makes regaining the track much easier when signs are lost.

Buck probably has no exit wound so blood trail is coming from hit side. Every time he goes by a bush tree arrow will pull wound open and chance for drops increases. If hit on rt side look for blood on rt side of deer trails. Don.t forget blood smears on bushes/grass on arrow impact side. Look about 1 1\2 to 2ft up on grass and bushes

Mechanical broadhead, blackout bow, blackout X5 Envy 400 arrow, Blood was consistent color, he crossed a dried creek, and made a question mark with my stand being the dot before I ran out of daylight.

Go back and find your horns. Do a grid search. Look under fallen logs and into briar thickets. Check nearby water sources.

There are blood dog groups on Facebook with a ton up here in our area near Shreveport . Like another poster said most don’t charge and just want to give their dog some work. I would post something there and I would bet a dog finds him quick.

Unfortunately I had an experience where I had killed a buck this year and buzzards didn’t show for four to five days. It was my best Louisiana buck to date and I found him but in retrospect a dog would have found him much quicker. A shoulder mount became a skull mount.

Good luck.

find someone with a Deutsch-Drahthaar (german wire hair pointer) and they can find it in no time I bet they have a fb page. 72 hour blood track is not unusual for this breed.

I got some good news. It took me until now, but I was able to find a baby sitter for the twins, and several trackers couldn’t help but I found one for tomorrow around noon. He’s not an advanced one but said he has a friend’s dog who is a hell of a tracker. It’ll be close to 72 hours since the shot.

I shot from 25 yards, then waited an hour to look, then went 50 yards slightly downhill, crossed a dried creek, then I finally found blood 2 hours and 75 yards away from my stand. Seems to be following a old trail.

Here is a layout of the land. I didn’t use toilet paper to mark, but eventually when I got to a dead point I’d drop a pin. If you were drawing a question mark with my stand is the dot and the last track where a dead point was the top left pin. Black is where I tracked Wednesday from 8:30-1:45, the bottom pen and top right to the left. I didn’t eat breakfast that morning or lunch and went to get water and food. i went back at 3-5:15 to see if I could retract from the start when I realized I’ll go right following the trail but ended complete the right portion circle of back to the bottom
Pin. I guess when I was looking ahead to see where he was I stumbled on some blood.

I thought surely he wouldn’t be circling around.the link lines are contour lines from a map.

Here is a picture of the blood color.
