What effect will the opening of the Bonnet Carre have on fishing along the MS Gulf coast?

I’m going to be heading down to Bay St Louis in about 10 days, and normally wade fish around Waveland. Will I be better off fishing the Gulfport area?

Your fricked, it was opened the first time a week after my boat was delivered and was just starting to clean up. Just enough to tease me.

Gonna be an ugly summer for trout fishing.

It's been real dirty since the first opening and will only get worse now. That said, there are still fish to be caught, especially reds, but can still catch plenty trout in this slop. Best options for trout though are to go further east or south and east.

Is Gulfport far enough east?

Would I be wasting my time fishing Waveland area?

I wouldn't say that, but you may have to change tactics a bit, especially if wadefishinf and can't bounce around.

I’ve got a conference at the beau late next week. Any tips on catching anything in that area? From the beach or wading.

You do realize it only concentrates the fish and makes them easier to catch once you find them correct?

Same here finally got the new boat rigged like I want and the spillway opens again.

I'll have to move from the Rigolets / Shell Beach / Hopedale area this summer to cleaner water near Grand Isle or Cocodrie.

Haven't fished those areas in years so something new will be a nice challenge.

It may not be bad. Obviously you don’t want to fish in spillway water, but the current opening might not even make it over there in 10 days. It can move pretty slow depending on the wind and the tide. Or it can move pretty fast. Just watch the wind closely. If you’ve got a couple days of good SE/E wind before you go, you should be fine.

If you have a good wind you should be fine with the water that’s currently there too. The spillway opening isn’t nearly as bad for trout fishing as people think. It makes water crap for awhile, but it brings in a ton of bait and isolates the fish pretty well. Just try to find clean salty water. If you can’t, go fishing anyway.

The trout fishing in hopedale/shell beach will probably be fine too. Not to sound like a broken record, but the wind and tide can move it out pretty quickly once it closes if we’re lucky. Even if not, good SE/E wind cleans outside up pretty well and that’s where most of the trout will be anyway.
