Not sure what else to tell you. There are about 3 pieces to this whole thing. Crawl your arse under there and figure it out.

Go to the coupler mfg website and get the manual for that model. It will have the instructions for bleeding the master cylinder and troubleshooting for your model.

Like was said there is the master cylinder and two wheel cylinders. One of them is the most likely the problem. Other than that, the shock absorber or actuator rod is all the is left.

Last thing I could think of other than above is if the shoes are way out of adjustment.

The only electrical actuator I know of on surge brakes is the solenoid that’s locks the brakes out when you put the vehicle in reverse. Some don’t even have one bc they are free backing by design.

You sure you didn’t just eliminate your brakes?

to lock out the brakes i have to insert a pin, its not automatic. however the blue wire that is supposed to be attached to the actuator had corroded at the connector. not sure yet if this is the problem but it did need to be fixed.

That doesnt make sense. If you had an electric over hydraulic setup, the coupler wouldnt slide unless it was a poorly done upgrade to a previously surge braked trailer. With a surge system, it doesn't use any electricity to function.

I believe the above poster is correct, you may be energizing the reverse lockout which prevents the actuator from depressing while the trucks reverse lights are on.

i fixed the blue wire, for whatever thats worth. no improvement and i wasn’t expecting any. there is no evidence of leaks at the wheels or under the the front of the trailer. my conclusion is the master cylinder is shot.
its not an after market set up either.
