Way back in the day I was on my way to the trestles in Lake P. and boat was handling like I had a heavy load. Started fishing and something didn't feel right. Lifted the back hatch and water was pouring in. Bilge couldn't keep up so I started her up, opened up the throttle and headed for the launch. I couldn't get on plane so I had my buddy sit on the nose of the bow. We finally got on top and I was able to pull the plug. It was enough to get us there but once I put the plug back in and slowed down we were barely able to get it back on the trailer. Once we got it back on the trailer we found cracks in the hull from a bad trailer roller.

You pulled the plug while running?

Yes, this is what you do to keep from sinking. Pull the plug once you get on plane and the water will run out of the plug hole

Right- I guess I need to look at my plug next time I am running and someone else is driving. Don't think I can stick my hand down there without it getting sucked into the prop, which is why I'm confused.
I've always assumed the plug had to be out before you started running. Like pull the plug with the motor cranked then gun it.
Edit: guess the prop is a good foot below the plug. Good lord I hope I never have to do that.

I've done this several times in fresh/protected water

Different setups for plug location. My mudboat has a plug on the inside of the hull. My Ranger has a plug on the outside.
Good to know the ins and outs of your boat for different situations that may arise.

Yes, once you are on plane pulling the plug drains the water. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless someone else can take over driving and as a last resort. Always put the plug back in before slowing down or if water doesn't drain (not on plane or not going fast enough). You will sink rapidly. It is also hard to do in rough water.

When I first got my boat the damn bilge was wired to a float, but then wired directly to the switch. So you flip the switch and the bilge would come on.
Got down in there and wired it correctly
So the bilge should be on a float swith and a manual override, correct? At least that is how mine is.
Of course the manual can not turn the bilge "off" just back to float control.

It should have three leads. One to ground, one to a float switch then direct to a battery, and one to a manual switch. I think what he is describing would only allow auto bilge if the manual switch and float switch were both on, which defeats the purpose of both the auto(float) and manual switch.

Depending on boat and plug type you can plug from inside or outside. I plug mine from the inside when I can. I have a Champion Bay boat that has a screw plug from the outside and is self bailing. This wouldn't be possible in that boat. Bilge pump and bailing would be the only option.

shite I bet I goofed.
Screw it I will pay someone to wire it back together after the season so it acts like what you're talking about. I bet all I had to do was replace that float switch and not mess with any other wiring.
Edit: it's only one switch labeled "auto bilge"

In my case, the plug was never in. No issue with prop. If flooding with it in, pull it before cranking engine.

I think they could all be a little different but the principals are the same. One way to turn it on with a switch, one way for the auto bilge or float switch to have power all the time, and one way to get to the negative of the battery.

Can you post the pic not on photobucket? Can't see what you posted (this one or any photobucket picture you've posted in the past...)
