Is the marlin fishery substantial enough that culling the bigger ones in tourneys isn't an issue?
By comparison, bass are released after weigh in. I know you cant catch and release a trophy marlin, but I can't believe the bunny huggers haven't pressured these anglers to find an alternative to sacrificing these bigger fish.

Usually don’t stick one unless it’s over 400lbs or so on the east coast. You’re looking at maybe .1% of the blues caught that are brought back to the dock. Sticking a small one less than 400lbs or so that is still capable of producing will get you crucified these days.
Any blue over 5-600 lbs isn’t reproducing due to age.
Tons of research recently between tagged billfish and the emergence of Omni sonars. The numbers are strong as hell and no impact to the actual population.

Im sure the majority of if goes to the boat. Those boats are usually set up where the boat is basically a stand alone business.

Every crew is different. Some are more rounded around family and might just have a full-time captain. Others are hardcore with prestigious captains and deckhands/mates with extensive experience. I knew a deckhand years ago who worked on a hardcore tourney boat in the Gulf and he would get paid ~10% of winnings.... havent spoken to him in a while but Ik he bought a big ol king ranch after one of those successful summers
