So keeping and killing every bass caught by our forefathers was the way to go. Do you not think some of the issues and regualtions we have now a days is beacuse of some of their practices.
My grandfather was as guilty as any of them. But i can say the bass fishing in the area I grew up in in south la, is not near as good today as it was 30 years ago. Lots of factors including over fishing have gotten it to where it is now.

So 30 years ago, fewer regs, more self regulation and more fish.
Today, more regs, more bitching about what fellow outdoorsman do, fewer fish.
I think I got it.
Look, I am not for keeping a ton of gamefish, but folks(not just here) act like it is just a damn sin. I personally think keeping enough for a mess or two is just fine. Freezing 15 qts off one trip....not too cool.

Well as you said caught and killed every bass caught how is that self regulation? My point is you how can a population sustain itself with this type of pressure. So now we are paying for it with less fish and more regulations .

Guess I should just take up big game hunting and print some nice pics off the internet and have replicas made. Could get me a nice collection off animals from all around the world to show off.

Ok, I think? But why is everyone getting their cage all rattled about the OP and his bass that he kept?
My point being that it used to happen with stunning regularity decades ago, and fish were fairly abundant. Fish are still plentiful most places, including many modern impoundments that didn't exist in the day, with stocking programs and great access. I am certain management is necessary for sustainability, but some common sense and some joy could go along way with a few.
All that and some still try to crap on another's success.

I agree for the most part it is a beautiful fish and the OP should be very proud of his catch any freshwater bass fisherman would be. And the OP has every right to keep the fish I have no problem with someone who follows the laws and regs.
I just think when it comes to fish a replica is a very good alternative to keeping a fish of that size.
To me the fun is in the actual catching and landing of the fish, but each person looks at it different.

Oh, I wouldn't have kept it either, but his fish, his choice.
I wouldn't get a replica either. I would take some hoisting pics though

This thread was disappointing to read.

I believe it is ridiculous not to practice conservation, when feasible.
It was feasible for the OP, he just didn't want to.
I'll leave it at this (Bill Dance on conservation):
“A sense of outdoorsmanship was instilled in me at a very young age. I couldn’t imagine where I’d be if it weren’t for folks taking time out to show me how my actions as a sportsman affect the conservation side of things. We have an obligation to future generations to expand their knowledge and capabilities in outdoor pursuits so they to can expand on our conservation efforts.”
