Haven't done it in years, but I used to just catch them by hand and put them in a mason jar.

Pull their glowing butts off and stick them together and make something. That's what we used to do

I think the proper name is lightning bugs. You catch with hands.

I haven't seen any since the city started spraying for mosquitoes.

Do you have them in Nola and Baton Rouge? Serious question, because we don't on the Florida Gulf coast. I think we had them in Auburn, almost positive. I was just curious where they stopped/ started. I've never seen them any where in Florida.
Must have something to do with frost/ freeze days or something? I've hunted a decent bit in south Alabama and don't remember seeing them much either.

Gonna go science nerd for a second.....
I remember naturalist David Attenborough had some documentary series on TBS back in the late 80's early 90's covering tons of animals and species.
I remember him describing that "lightening bugs" are mating and that is the signal for a mate.
Take a pen light and when you see one flash, count 1000-1, 1000-2....then flash the pen light. Do that once or twice and the fly will come to you. It works, I have done it.

Yep, it's been years since I've seen them in N.O.
I remember as a kid going to my aunts house up in Luling and catching them there with my cousins, but that was over half a damn century ago now. Wow, how time flies, especially the older one gets.

I've seen a few over the past few weeks in Baton Rouge. Magnolia Woods area.
