Out of the places listed, I'd go:
1) East TN
2) MO Ozarks
Then again, I'd rather be more eastern.
I love VA though.

Mountains
Can't live with a flat landscape. Gotta have mountains and 4 seasons, cooler summers.

shush! We like our secret to be kept secret.
ETA: Can't remember which but one of the huge Outdoor mags named Mtn. Home, Arkansas as the best place to live for outdoor enthusiasts. It's not a bad place, lots of Yanks from Chicago area retire down there. There's a couple lakes real close, Ranger boats HQ 20 min. away, Bass Pro HQ 2 hours away, Mark Twain Nat'l Forest 45 min. away, Roaring River in SW MO not too far for trout, Little Red for trout too. Branson is 1.5 hrs away, Buffalo Nat'l River is really close, The Ozark Nat'l Forest is right there too, and there's all the caves and caverns and great trails for hiking and mountain biking.
Job opportunities aren't great and the pay is shite for the ones you can find, hence why I left. If you need a little more city life then NWA is a good choice, and Springfield is a fairly nice lily white type area with KC and STL just a few hours drive away. I've always had fun in Mtn. Home and West Plains, MO it's a slower pace of life for sure.

Funny, cause my bride said she would never move there. I retire in 7-8 years and would love to buy some land there to live out my retired years.

He gets to catch salmon and halibut and cool shite like that. And bears just take leisurely strolls down the street like its no big deal. I wouldn't expect him to miss it

Im living in Bozeman now and really enjoy it. Even have some smallmouth bass around the area but honestly, id put up the bass tackle and get into fly fishing. Just started last year and its a blast...not to mention the area bozeman is in is one of the best places in the world to fly fish. Other than that its about 1.5hrs drive to West Yellowstone, bunch of ski resorts (mountains) all over including big sky (45mib drive). Fun little college town with lots to do.
Edit: not to mention elk tags over the counter for residents and some massive whitetails north on the milk river.

I caught a nice Dolly Varden on a fly rod on Sat. It helps to ease the loss of bass fishing.

I'd much rather have the salmon and halibut than bass fishing. Ex-gf's dad and brothers live on the outskirts of Wasilla, the fresh Salmon was some of the best eating I've had. Liked it much better than lake bass or river catfish I've caught here.

Agree it's as fun (or more) and better to eat. Just a very limited amount of time you can catch them. Salmon runs are something to behold though, pretty amazing.
Main thing I miss about bass fishing was being able to fish my own pond. But hell, I have 10x more places I can fish for Salmon here than I could bass there, so it's not important to have my own private access.

Some of the towns and villages shut down when certain runs are occurring. You could probably walk across some of these streams without getting your feet wet when the chum salmon are running, there are thousands of them in a small stream. Amazing stuff.

I will not consider another move until I know I can own water front. Must be suitable for jugs/noodles or at least some sort of fishing from bank/dock.
