The smoked sausage isn’t as good as it used to be. The use to focus on that and now it’s just one of many things they do and the quality suffered .

Vans in Brandon, MS
Best smoked sausage in the Southeast

Figured someone would post this. Vans is the worst, last deer I took there I made sure it was super clean, what I got back I had to throw away due to the amount of hair in it.

Van's screwed me a time or two. Lost my deer once, how do you lose a deer? Another time I took a 250lb buck in and got about 20lbs back??? Pretty confident they are just piling all the deer together.

100% you don't get your deer back at Vans.

For sausage, people drive hours to Dwights south of Jxn. He's an ornery old cuss so don't get sideways with him. It will take forever, but it is the best.

But even the best deer sausage pales in comparison to anything from Country Pleasin'

Petoskey’s in Monticello, LA on the east bank of Bayou Macon is the best that I have come across. Forty-five minute drive from my hunting grounds but worth it. I never processed the hogs that I killed before being introduced to Petoskey’s product. Now I process 3 or 4 per year and my previously non-game eating bride reminds me when it’s time to kill another for the freezer. The deer burritos and specialty products are very good and wildly popular. I know of a hunter that killed a big doe and processed it 100% into burritos.

What are they good at besides burritos? Is their ground meat good? They are the closest to where I hunt

Stacey’s in Utica is by far the best I’ve had. I’ve probably used 10 different places for sausage and I now drive 5 hours to drop and pick up at Stacy’s in Utica. They are fast too. Like 7-10 days and you have your meat.

So far we’ve only done ground meat. I think we will try sausage this year, for that, I will use pork. But the burger using beef as the fat source instead of pork is a world of difference.

Yup. I live in Greenwood, and have spent hundreds, maybe 1000+ dollars trying to find good smoked sausage closer. Doesn’t exist. I just drive the 2 hours to Van’s.

eta: BB’s here in Greenwood is pretty good, but still not Van’s.

I use Carl Bateman (The Skinning Shed) in Bude, MS. Great dude and his product is really good. I've seen him and his crew and they don't waste a thing when you drop off an animal. He does good taxidermy for a very fair price too.

This. Burritos and ground meat are great. Had him do a mount for me as well which came out fantastic. Smoke sausage is also good. Only things I wouldn’t recommend are his jerky and tamales.
