Infidel knows my answer: .270 wsm!!!!!
7mm-08 may be a GREAT round for louisiana. But I would not shoot a big bear nor an elk with this caliber
I would put 7 Mag and 308 as my next two choices.

coupled with your sig pic is just damn funny.
I agree with Infidel 270, 30-30, 30-06, 308 all great guns.
I like the 308 due to the short bolt and well studied ballisitcs.

One that the shooter is good enough to place the bullet exactly where he wants. One could elk hunt with a 22/250 as long as he is confident in his shot placement.

It really depends on what you are hunting. If you are hunting deer and hogs in Louisiana, I will make a statement that I will probably get hammered for but I have the experience to back it up. For deer, any of the flat shooting calibers will work fine, such as 243, 257, 6.5mm, 270, 308, 30/06, 7-08, 280, 7mm Mag, 300 mag. A whitetail is simply not that tough if you put the proper bullet in the vital area. I would not go smaller than 243 and unless you shoot at extreme long range there is no need to go over 300 mag.
But all of that said, pick a rifle that you can shoot comfortably and not be bothered by the recoil. I know some guys that buy a 300 mag so they can look tough but then cant hit the side of the barn with it because recoil bothers them.
In truth, with any of the above calibers, it will be hard to tell the difference if shots are 300 yards and under. Over that , then it is a little different ballgame.
I have killed deer with the following calibers - 223, 243, 6.5 x 55, 260, 270, 7 mag, 30/06, 8 mm Mauser, 300 mag, and 375 mag at ranges up to 550 yards. Anything above 243 is absolutely deadly if you use the proper bullet and put it in the right place. I normally hunt with either a 30/06 or a 7 mag.
I suggest you pick a couple calibers that spark your fancy, find a friend who has a rifle in that caliber and shoot it, and pick the one you are most comfortable with.
Too many people fret too much over this decision when in reality it really dont matter so much.
Now if you want to hunt bigger game such as elk, then that is another topic.

All the round listed are great ones. There is a reason they have been around for so long. Personally, I shoot a .270 and love it.
The one thing about the 7mm 08 is that ammo isn't always easy to get. If you forget to bring it with you and you are out in the boonies, you might not be able to buy it since it isn't that common.
Spot on. I have shot a .270 for years and can drive tacks with it. Minimal recoil, factory ammo available everywhere. One son shoots a 7MM-08, love it, ammo not that easy to find, even in the city. Other son shoots a .270 WSM-a lot more recoil and blows up the regular size WT deer we shoot. It is probably the one of the three I would grab for an elk hunt though (Jack O'Conner I'm not).

What Jimbeaux said.
If I were picking a new rifle, it would come down to one of the short calibers under .30 cal pushing a 120ish grain bullet over 2,400 but under 3,000.

Just a logistic question: Why so many different calibers? Seems like that is a pain to make sure everyone has the right bullets.
Reason why I ask, my dad and I years ago settled on a .30-06 (he really made this decision, I was just a kid). That way, when we meet at the camp, if one of us forgets our bullets they can use the other persons.

I have one of these and love it. My magazine got stolen out of my truck and I have yet to find a quality replacement. I've been through at least 5. My gun NEVER jammed with the original mag, but now I'm having problems with it.
I switched to a 30-30 for my dog hunting gun now, but would love to get this thing back rolling.

My dad taught me that if you leave your bullets at home you don't hunt.
that's why I have my trusty pre-hunt check list. Rifle, cartridges, wallet.
After all the replies in this thread I'll still go with the original answer. The ole tried and true trio of 30-06, 270 and 308. All the rounds mentioned here have merit, but these three are a great compromise of all of them. They will all get the job done on anything in north America except maybe grizzly bears and that is a huge maybe. Regardless, if you can afford a grizzly hunt you can afford a new rifle!

Have you guys even looked at the ballistics? I am not saying I would go elk or bear hunting with a 7mm-08 but it's more than capable.

Well do a search for ballistics then, the point is they are all very very close to one another.
