So I hope one day they make it legal here in Louisiana, but for now who here has ever been on a bear hunt. Been kicking the idea around for a while but looking for advice on states guides and accommodations. Black or brown bear archery would be cool but I’m open to rifle hunts also.

Friend of mine went. I think it was Canada but not sure. I do remember him telling me the locals didn't eat the meat.

Have never been. You can hunt them in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Georgia if you want to try close by.

Went bear hunting in Alaska, awesome experience, saw a few (browns and blacks) but did not kill a bear, shot a great bull moose though. The Alaskan experience was fantastic, do it if you can

I went on rifle hunt in New Brunswick. Literally hunted donuts piled up 50 yards from busy gravel road with a gate. Several people would stop and spend a few minutes opening / closing gate and talking on cell phone each afternoon. Outfitter told me it was only place with good cell phone reception so people would make calls there. I shot a medium size bear second afternoon to get it over with. Hunted grouse rest of trip which was fun but not exactly sporting since outfitters method was to ride down dirt roads and shoot them in the road. Second trip was to Saskatchewan. Bow hunt. Green Lakes outfitters if I remember right. Told outfitter I wanted to hunt “remote” and not repeat other trip. We drove down dirt road for 45 min and then road on 4 wheeler for another 45 min. Killed another medium size bear with my bow first afternoon ( 3rd bear I saw but should have waited). Way better trip. Way prettier scenery than New Brunswick. Best part of this trip was seeing all the ducks around Saskatoon ( it was in June) and fishing. Lake next to cabin had unbelievable amount of 1 to 2 lb pike. Literally every cast. My hands were cut up from taking fish off the hook. Mosquitoes were unbelievable. Worse than I have ever experienced in Louisiana. Thermacell was necessary. Outfitter said they are only bad after middle of May. I went first of June and I was his last hunter of the spring.

As I have no desire to eat a bear I have no desire to kill a bear, I'm just funny that way I guess.

Same here. I was involved with it when I first moved here but now I have no desire to shoot one. I do hunt bear with my camera though.

Me and my old man went on a spot and stalk black bear hunt a couple years ago in British Columbia with BC Guide Outfitters. It was a lot of riding around in the truck and stopping to glass to cover more ground, but we saw plenty of bears each day. We put multiple ground stalks on big bears and were each able to shoot a mature boar by the end of the trip. We hunted with a rifle, but had each boar within bow range of course. It was an awesome experience overall but probably something that I will only do once.

To hear Rinella talk about it, black bears are excellent eating if they haven’t been feeding on dying salmon. He talks about spreading the fat of bears that’s turned blue from berries on toast like jelly, and that rendered bear fat is the best cooking oil on the planet. The meat is like pork. I would eat it if offered based on how highly he talks about it.

That said, I can’t say I’m in a hurry to shoot one as he also has described the noises they make after being shot as dog-like and sad. We’ve all had that tick of remorse after pulling the trigger a time or two, for some reason hearing a bear wheeze out would make me feel like a POS.

went in mid August with Northern Wilderness Outfitters White River Ontario( N of Waa Waa and @ 7.5 hour drive from Grand Rapids Mich). Its a beautiful drive with hundreds of lakes (full of fish) the guide fee which includes stands, bait, cleaning, storage etc is @ $1200 it fluctuates depending on taxes gun fees etc. Canada license is @$ 240 export fee is $35. Many years they have 100% success. R.J. Meyer(616-826-9409) is US contact and taxidermist(rug and skull is @800 to 1200 depending on how big bear is) fantastic trip- mosquitoes not too bad -but- these bears are plentiful but only two of 75 or so was over 300 pounds I didnt see any bad pelts I loved the hunt but really wanted a bigger bear. I originally planned to go to British Columbia Island but this was last minute and too cheap to pass up. You need to factor airfare to Grand Rapids, Auto rental and motel cost. The woods are so thick you cannot stalk nor can you hear- all of a sudden they just appear -quite a rush

I've hunted in northern Maine. Back in the early 70's a big game license in Maine was good for deer and bear. I ate some bear meat a buddy of mine shot and it was damn good.
