It works pretty good huh? I picked up some Redhead Enduraskin stuff at BPS earlier today. It feels like it would work in the somewhat cold mornings. How cold have you hunted with that silk stuff and stayed warm?

I use the Patagonia Capiline gear, its fantastic. Wicks well and eliminates the need for multiple layers even in the coldest environments..

If you live in LA, you don't need fancy stuff. It's not that cold.

Lowest I have ever hunted in was -8 with a 20 mph wind. In that cold of weather you have to layer a lot.

Last year at Ft Knox, KY...mid teens..no wind. I layed the silks with polypros and bibs and a jacket. All was good except my face.

I most highly recommend getting some patagonia capiline as a base layer. It comes in four thicknesses, 1 (the thinest) and 3 (thicker) are the most popular. They last forever and will not let you down.

Thanks for the responses. I'm gonna check all this stuff out. Like said earlier though, it doesn't get that cold here. That's why I didn't wanna spend so much for a base layer I'm not going to need that much.

There's a few ways to look at it. If you spend the money on something good, it will last you forever. For me.. the most important thing is comfort. I don't want to save a few bucks and be uncomfortable in the blind/stand. If its not going to be that cold, get something lightweight, but if you are going to be active, make sure its got the wicking capabilities you need.

Ive always said you get what you pay for and never really applied that logic to my base layer. That's why I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it. I wouldn't say I've been uncomfortable in the stand before (because of the base layer) but it may just be that I don't know any better.

I got the UA stuff as a Christmas present for skiing a year or two ago. It's good stuff. You can find some good deals online for it.

The old school thermal underwear are hard to beat, but the UA stuff is just more comfortable IMO.

ETA: And the UA doesn't make you stay hot if it starts to warm up a bit. It breathes well if it starts to get hotter, so you aren't peeling off layers.

I have some of Cabela's brand that is similar to UA. It works great, much better than normal long johns and more comfortable and less bulky. It goes on sale every once in a while and is cheaper than UA.

I have hunted in 14 degree weather and was very warm in the following:
UA cold gear mock turtle necks. Then a thin microfleece zip up top and pants. Then 5 mil waders and a lightweight water proof windbreaker style jacket.

The UA and similar products of the same fabric are MUCH better at keeping you warm than the old traditional cotton thermal underware. If you are concerned about them getting wet go with wool as it retains its insulation properties even when wet. The compression fit is nice as it will stretch to fit tall persons also. My biggest problem with the UA though is that it will pull your beard stubble and sometimes chest/arm hair.
