I'd have a 380 in my right front pocket or a 9mm on an outside the waistband holster, just behind my right hip.
For me, carrying on the hip and using a backpack aren't compatible. I carry a concealed holster tucked in front on my right backpack belt. It rides in front and I can draw it fairly quickly. I have bear spray holstered on front left belt. I've seen others hook the bear spray to the shoulder straps. That is another choice, just not my preference.
I've found anywhere else and I can't get to either quickly. The backpack determines where you can holster the pistol. My pack isn't comfortable with a pistol anywhere else. I have a Galco shoulder rig with pistol under left arm and the two mags under right arm. I haven't tried it with a pack yet.
If OP is really backcountry hiking, I'd like to know if he is going to be out for days. That means water filtration and a cooking system like a jetboil. And I'd like to know his pack weight.
Edit: I was in Silverthorne REI and a girl was gearing up for a 60 mile trail hike. Her pack was 21 pounds. She was trying to shave off an extra pound and get her pack to 20 pounds.

So what kind of firearm would you guys carry for general backcountry safety?
What do you own?
As others have stated, shooting an 800 pound bear with a 380, 9mm, 40, 45...is likely going to have you going through its digestive track.
I carry both, I know I am macing first for sure. I'm not 100% sure, but the pistol might be for me to avoid being eaten alive.

I don’t own a gun.

Well, I'd say your options are wide open then.
Edit: Bear spray is going to save your arse way more than a pistol. The pistol can make noise but I don't know if it will roll a bear.
Nobody here has mentioned a 10mm, but a Glock 21 would be a formidable weapon against most animals and people. The .41 and .44 revolvers are solid choices too.
My Glock 40 cal isn't the best option, but it is what I have here. And at some point you are going to have to put all this on a scale and decide if it's worth the weight.

I don’t know the laws where you are at but I’ve walked many long distances with a full backpack and camping stuff while carrying my shotgun. Can you just get a shoulder strap and keep a shotgun on you? Pretty sure a slug or buckshot will slow it down enough to get 1-2 more shots in it.

Bear spray is the same pepper spray that women walk around with, but it just comes in a bigger canister.

Yes, they are. And I'm not venturing out into the bush tomorrow. It would be at least a year before I would take on such a trip.

A recent amendment allows carry in NP.
Google says 2010. I knew it was at least 5 years because that's when I talked to the ranger.

A 10mm Glock 20 or 40. 16 rounds of hot 10mm is very lethal on 4 and 2 legged threats. I carry a 9mm every day but if I hiked a ton and lived in grizzly and mountain lion country, I would carry a 10mm.

What’s the difference in a 20 and 40?

40 has a plate to mount a red dot while 20 does not. Barrel on the 40 is longer than the 20. Longer barrel gives you higher velocity. The longer barrel in the 40 with some hot loads is ideal but the 20 does weigh a little less.
